Had to hunt from the ground this evening because of the wind and I didn't have a good stand location for this spot. I ended up setting up at the bottom of a couple draws that feed a bottom where there's an old pasture that gets bush hogged once a year. There are 3 finger-spurs that have trails cut from the ridge top to the bottom. The draws are THICK. Normally I hunt at the tops of the draws, but wind was blowing down into them, so I thought I'd try in the bottom. Wind blowing into this old pasture that is actually a good looking spot to hunt, but I'm expecting deer to come down the spurs. About 4 the wind stops blowing, so every once in a while I look behind me just to make sure nothing comes that way. Well, wouldn't you know it at 430 I look behind me and see a good one working a scrape 50 yards away. I get turned on him, gun up and I'm ready! He's facing my direction, but he has no idea I'm there so I wait. He picks his head up and looks behind him and I settle the crosshairs on his neck and tickle the trigger, but decide to wait...he's clueless I'm there right? Suddenly the wind freshens and he looks my way and immediately flips around and walks away! :bash: I'm sick thinking about not shooting. I had a great shot on the neck. I've never shot a deer in the neck, and just didn't want to. Sick. Sick. Sick. I'm usually a meat hunter, but on Veterans Day I'm a buck hunter. I've always had great success on November 11th, and reserve that day for my best buck spot.
