So angry!!! Just missed a beautiful buck not 20 yds from me. I just got all boogered up in my head. I thought I got him, I got a cup of coffee and when I got out if the blind, the group was still nearby and took off. I'm an idiot for not seeing them! Checked for blood, and there was none to be found anywhere. Apparently I took out an oak, but there are no tags for those.

Not long after I heard two shots in front of me. I probably pushed him, and who knows if he's in someone else's ATV right now.

Anyway, I'm wondering if I should stay put. What do y'all think?
 
Sorry to hear that, it happens, I'd stay put for a while even though it would be tough for me to keep sitting and not quit and go home.

Were you rifle hunting or Bow hunting ?
 
There's the embarrassing question I'd hoped no one would ask. I was at a brand new place this morning. It's a buddy's honey hole. No one's gotten a chance to hunt that site all season, and he wasn't able to, either, and he invited me to sit there for the weekend. I'm used to hunting huge fields, not woods. After I missed (yes, with a rifle), I racked my brain to figure out how in world I'd missed. I've gotten a buck a week for the last three weeks (one was in AL), and all three were right where I'd "X"-ed them. It hit me about two hours later that my scope was at its highest magnification. That's what I'm used to having to do at the place I normally hunt. As I said before, my brain was all boogered up, and I felt like I saw what I needed to see. I'm an idiot, and yes, this is my first season deer hunting.

I sat there all day and didn't see a thing. Bumped a couple coming off the hill after dark, but the most action I got up top was a boat load of crows and a few snorts way off in the distance.

I'm going to try the spot again in the morning and bid farewell to my first TN deer season. As you can guess, I'm sure, I'm sick. I reeled myself into a headache that hasn't gone away without a little BC Powder. I can't think straight.

Hunting woods is MUCH different than hunting wide open expanses.
Smallest of twigs will throw off your shot, all kinds of movement and shadows to deal with, squirrels making racket, not to mention how being 20 ft+ up a tree alters perspective. Shot a doe this morning that I'd about convinced myself I missed. Well, I ended up finding blood camouflaged in the leaves. I was 10 yards off from where I thought it was when I shot it. Found her 135 yards away, hit right behind the shoulder where I'd put it. You might go back and circle out from where you thought it was to make sure you didn't actually hit it.
 
Yep, Shot a 6-pointer and he was a full 10 yards deeper into the woods than I thought. Had a turrible time until I found the blood-one look I knew he was dead-and followed it right to him. Thing is, I bet I spent 40 minutes looking for that first blood sign.

Two years ago I killed a mighty oak limb, never saw it in the scope, I considered cutting the limb off as a reminder. I keep my leupold down to 3.5 and only move it up if I absolutely have to. Field of view is kinda important.
 
The key is that you are having fun and going through what all of us have gone through...missing a buck. I chuckled when you said "got boogered up in my head"...I sure can relate to that! Have fun out there
 
i missed a buck last week. i tracked for blood for an hour and did not find any so i was confident it was a clean miss. i debated hunting that stand location again because i was sure the buck would never show for the remainder this season. i posted about the miss and got some good feeback from some memebers. well, i revisited that stand site a few days later and saw the same buck i had missed. a clean shot was never offered but at least i know he is still kicking. as a matter of fact i am in that same ladder stand right now and will be this evening to end the season. goodluck and i hope you get em!
 
I truly hate that for you. I hope your headache goes away and you score this evening. It hurts to miss. I know that feeling all too well. At least you found the problem and can fix it. Good luck.
 
When I went back through the steps and saw the angle from the blind and the graze on the tree, there's no way I hit him. Too low. I saw 7 does this morning, four from the same spot, but he wasn't showing his face if he was with them. I'm still beating myself up over it today, but it's all good. Lesson learned. I've gotten 3 bucks this season, and I'm not finished yet in Alabama. For my first deer season ever, I'm more pumped than I ever been about anything, and bow season can't come soon enough (just got my first bow). I'm hooked like an arrow in a gar (my now former favorite outdoor sport.
