For those who use mineral what type or brand do you recommend? Presently, I don't have area near fields so I'm hunting deep woods small tributaries surrounded by planted pines. Have my share of acorns and just now heading out tomorrow. Never used minerals before but a friend said I should. Any advise would be great. Thanks

No need to use them. They do nothing except serve as a summer-time attractant, IF they are mostly salt.

Your friend has probably seen too many TV hunting shows and read too many big buck magazines. Both use advertising that claims minerals are critical for growing large-antler bucks. Yet no scientific evidence exists suggesting minerals do anything positive for free-range deer; not in antler growth and not in animal health.

In the area we hunt, the deer will visit our mineral site yr round. My son killed a doe last yr on muzzle loader, that was in it, and we had does in it on juvi hunt last year as well. I am still getting regular pictures of deer visiting it as of last Friday. Trophy rock, and granual cattle salt is what we use.

Haven't seen any bucks hitting it but the doe I killed opening day had come back to the salt lick for a second time when I killed her

Actually, the minerals themselves are extremely bitter, and deer won't use them. That's why minerals are mixed with very heavy doses of salt (most mineral mixes are over 50% salt). Deer, like many mammals, like salt.

I've seen some areas where deer will use salt-licks year round, some where they only use them in summer, and other areas where deer aren't drawn to salt at all.

we use just white salt licks used by most people for cows and horses deer seem to like them quite a bit. but a whole lot more during the summer.
