I shot my kid's CVA Wolf in today at the range. The first shot was about 4 inches low and about 3 inches to the right at 100yds. My buddy said "Oh you better move that scope about 16 clicks up and about 12 to the left". I said that was a fouling shot, I wiped a slightly moist patch down the barrel followed by a dry one. I said let's see where this one lands, it should be close, well it hit about 1 inch high over the bullseye, I pushed a dry patch down the barrel and reloaded. The next and last shot hit right beside the last shot, I ran a moist patch down the barrel followed by a dry one and cased the rifle. It will be ready to go on Monday after Muzzleloader opening which is when I can go. As I drove off I thought about how I would have chased the shots all around the target in years past and shot several unnecessary shots in the first place. What do y'all do?

Very good advice. I always take a couple shots before moving any scope, mostly to rule out use error on the shooters part, (me)

Got taught this many years ago by a well seasoned hunter/instructor - after you clean the barrel and before you fire the first shot you can foul the barrel by two ways. First if you are shooting an inline with 209 primers about 3 or 4 primers thru it will foul it or ( this works with side locks or inlines ) pour around 10 grains of loose powder down the barrel then shoot it. It works and is a lot cheaper than a full load.

I have a Knight ML that shoots good clean or fouled...but, I also have a CVA Kod Mag that needs a fouled barrel to bring it in on target. Makes a difference for sure!

When I used pyrodex or 777 I had my Encore sighted in with a dirty barrel so I could shoot several times without swabbing. All that goes away with blackhorn, no difference between 1st or 15th shot and no swabbing.

I shoot 2-3 primers first and then swab one patch to distribute the fouling evenly through the bore. Next time you shoot a couple primers pull the breech plug and take a look. The fouling from the primers will be towards the breech of the bore. I take a patch and swab it once to get it throughout the bore plus it catches any excess oil.
