Took my nephew this morning and I messed him up by not checking his red dot at first light. Had one come in at 15 yards and he couldn't see the dot. Finally got it brightened up and by that time he got squirrely and moved off. Sat and watched him til 1030 with hens but couldn't get him back in range.
He was ready to go home so I dropped him off and came to my other property in hopes of hearing a mid day gobbler. Got set up at 12:20 and called. At 1:05 I made one scrape of the striker and heard footsteps close. A hen popped up 10 yards away. I froze and luckily she didn't see me. Few mins later I caught movement further down the hill and it was 2 strutting. I was already in position and found a hole for the lead bird. I must've looked away or something because I looked again and thought they'd busted me. I shot at 30-35 yards and when I jumped up the lead gobbler took off. I had shot the 2nd bird. Either way, glad to be on the board for the year after getting skunked last year.
I love hunting in the woods. These didn't gobble one time but still fun having to pick your spots to shoot.
Red circle is the spot I shot it at.
