The freeze is broken, thanks to Al Gore's Global Warming, but the thaw will take until Sunday.
Wednesday afternoon, I had a tractor make a couple of passes in front of a blind in 12 in. water. I checked it yesterday and the slabs of ice sticking out of the mud looked 4 in. thick.
There were 200 geese and 50 ducks sitting on the 30 acres of ice.
I will check again this afternoon.
One of my old friends, but new readers gave a good report from the Charleston-Webb-Crowder area. Corps. is dropping water into the Coldwater and Tallahatchie and this is causing low areas to flood. Where there is current, the water is open, with ducks.
Lots of ducks, lots of hunters, hard hunting.
Another reader near Augusta reported today that fields were thawing around the edges and waterfowl usage was up.
AGFC reports that they counted (new system this year) almost 2.4 million ducks on their aerial survey (Jan. 4-6). Main concentration is along the flooded White from Augusta to Clarendon.
That would be almost a 1.5 million increase over their Dec. count.
What are these guys smoking?
MDWFP reports large concentration where I said they were, about 100 miles south of Memphis.
This has been a disastrous season for the MidSouth duck hunter, but the last two weeks could make us forget the hard times.
Got kids in town, will try a family pay hunt at Bayou DeView Outfitters near Waldenburg on Sunday morning; they tell me they are breaking ice for us right now.
