Merino wool

For years I heard everyone here raving about merino wool base layers. I honestly felt I had base layers covered, as I used heavy-weight polar fleece base layers. But after being badgered about my resistance, and finally seeing some merino base layers on sale, I gave them a try (320-weight). OH. MY. GOODNESS! Is that stuff warm! I now keep an eye on merino wool products looking for good deals. Although this isn't the greatest deal in the world, it blows away places like Smartwool or Sitka. I found top and bottom 250-weight for a combined $99 at Merino.tech, and their 320-weight is $120 for top and bottom combined. Just thought I would let merino wool fans know...

I prefer the Merino wool for my base layer as well. The best place I have ever found it is on Sierra Trading Post's website.

I had never heard of the wash inside out thing. Very interesting. I've definitely been air-drying all my merino.

Beware! Midways medium base morino is paper thin.
BSK the original Browning Polar Fleese is awesome. The top has lasted me maybe 15 years.

I've got polar-fleece base layers over 20 years old. I still use them for temps 35 and up. But near or below freezing, merino without a doubt.

My mid-layers are still polar-fleece.

I have so many different brands of Merino Wool in different weights that I've picked up on sale. From high dollar stuff to eBay deals & I love it all. My go to the last month in WY has been 100 weight for walking & sitting. No stink whatsoever, even with getting camp shower about every 4 days. I absolutely hate to be encumbered with heavy clothing, so I jumped on the ultralight bandwagon pretty early & no regrets.

No reason to ever pay retail as all have great sales at least a couple times a year. KUIU is my fav and most all my outer layers from them have Merino in them as well. Almost always shop their clearance sales and have bought $200+ pieces for $40-50. Wing Supply is another place for great deals. If your not on their mailing list, you should be.One of the best pairs of ultralight merino wool pants I own is Browning Hells Canyon that I bought for $29 from them.

My mid-layers are still polar-fleece.

Try a pair of 250 gm merino for 35 degrees and up. They won't cause you to sweat when temps rise mid day like polar fleece.

I bet that's true. Polar fleece can make you hot if you move around much.

I now wear merino wool boxer briefs year round, most comfortable underwear Ive ever put on. If you pay attn Black Ovis runs them on sale couple times a year.

Im hearing bankruptcy but that really surprises me with the amount of product they moved on a daily basis. Management must have been terrible if thats true?

I have the Waxed Rancher and the Original. I like them both for different reasons. The waxed Rancher is a waxed cotton hat with insulation, and has a fleece flap to fully cover the ears. It is water resistant, but I wouldn't want to stand all day in the rain with it. It is a tad heavy, but it is warm.

The original is mostly wool with a little bit of nylon. It is a bit lighter than the Waxed Rancher. It doesn't have the pull down flaps the Rancher has , but it has the covering for the ears. It doesn't really fully cover the ears like the rancher, but it's enough to keep the chill off the ears. I may get an orange one for hiking in the fall/winter.
