Hunted till noon on national forest, found a fresh set of gobbler tracks, so I may have a new target. Got in a hailstorm, soaking wet, screw it, I want to pattern my new gun at 40y to be ready for TN, especially since I polished the barrel.

Went to the range...

Swapped out the factory XF choke i have been using (.690) in the Stevens 301T for the Carlsons LBXR choke (.660) and shot my #6s LBXRs. Holy crap this is TIGHT. WAY too tight to hunt with in the thick stuff i hunt in MS, but most of my TN shots are in the 35y range...

Not sure i want to use this choke... may go back to the factory .690? I dont get many under 20y shots on my TN farms, so maybe stick with the .660 choke?

But if it wanted to take shots at 50y with lead, this combo would do it for sure.

You have a less dense 10" patten with the 660 then the 690?

Are those at different patten distances?

***never mind I now see you said 40yds for the 660
 
Looks good to me. Either would work but I have a Kicks .660 in my 12 gauge. It's averaged 204 in the 10" at 42yds with LB #6's.


A better comparison would be 20yd patterns and I doubt you'd see a difference between the .660 and .690.
 
it doesnt look overly tight to me personally but then again Im not the one toting it. Worst case stick the 690 in when you are hunting more hardwoods, slap the 660 if you are in TN. As long as the POI is the same on both then you have the best of both worlds.

For sure, the .690 down here in MS.

I guess i need to shoot the factory .690 at 40y to see if it is adequate at that distance for TN.

Upside... $1.50 per shot.

Downside... my shoulder is still sore from shooting a couple rounds earlier today 😀
