I have a t/c new Englander I've never fired.I asked a gunsmith friend of mine to clean it up. He's got it cleaned now I'm ready to hunt with it this season. Problem is the gun shop guy gave me sabots and thw sabots will jot work i heardand I need another bullet option I seen these and wondered if they were worth the money
Maxi hunter 20 bucks for 20
And maxi ball is about the same price.

It seems they would load easier because of the bore butter coating but I wanted input from someone who knows what you are doing.
 
My experience with that T/C was a lot of years ago, but as I recall, it shot both the maxi ball and maxi hunter quite well. I don't remember the particular load. They are fine rifles.

I do like the bore butter. I use in on my round ball patches.
 
I've got to get me some Buffalo bullets. I plan on bringing my Dad's or My Grandpa's Hawken out of retirement this year. Hopefully will locate some public ground to kill a doe with them. They always shot lights out with the Buffalo bullets and open sights.

absolutely , that's what i still use. harder to find the old skool mz things. i usually order big bulks of powder , lead , flint and caps.
 
I used a New Englander for many years. It was a great rifle and very accurate with any traditional style bullet. Mine was amazing with a patched round ball and 90 grains of pyrodex. Many , many deer crumpled in front of that load. It shot Buffalo bullets really well too.

Give the Powerbelt pure lead bullets a try.

Thanks for all the input. I ordered maxi-hunter. I went to the range but it was raining and I didn't want to risk the pyrodex powder getting wet. I will try soon I hope.
 
I bought a TC Hawken .50 from a co-worker. It had set in the closet for several years but it cleaned up well. The barrel seems to be in good shape but the stock still has a few scratches. I'm looking forward to getting it out and checking the accuracy. I've been hunting with a .45 sidelock for many deer seasons and enjoy the nostalgia of the replica BP rifles.
 
Believe me, a .50 or .54 ball is absolute death on deer. Besides that they are way cheaper to shoot than all those fancy bullets. You can get a bunch of practice and fun shooting at a fairly low cost. If you don't want to cast them yourself you can order them in bulk from Eddie May in Chatsworth, Ga. He's very reasonably price and ships flat rate to save on shipping.

They can be very accurate, but a lot depends on the gun and other factors. Most of the old side lock TC's had a 1 in 48 twist rate which is kinda a compromise twist so they could shoot both round balls and conicals. A slower twist for round balls and a faster for bullets would imo be more ideal. I had a New Englander for a while and it seemed to handle patched round balls very well, at least out to the distances I feel comfortable hunting deer in a woodland setting which would be 50/60 yards with iron sights. I know they will kill farther out I but just don't like making what I call a long shot with a rb. In short round balls are relatively cheap when compared to the bullets and allow for more shooting practice at a much lower cost than bullets. If you are willing to accept their limitations then you might want to try em.

Eddie doesn't have a website. Most of his business is by word of mouth although he may advertise in a few ML publications. I do know he is one of the suppliers for Dixie Gun Works. He offers a wide variety of RBs in a bunch of diameters. I think he also sells some conicals. You will have to call him for your needs, but fair warning he's a talker. I've known Eddie for years.
