During the rut,do mature bucks pay attention to human scent much or do they just worry about what they are after.My friend says don't worry about the wind,just hunt. I don't want to send my scent into the area where I think they are.Which is right or are we both right?
 
They worry about what they are after but definitely worry about your human scent that can definitely mess up your hunt. Just say they dont care about human scent (which they do) but what if he follows does in? They bust you!
 
I'll say this....I've had 2.5-4.5 year old bucks come charging in after does and I've had those same bucks come in trailing does. Your scent is more likely to detour a trailing buck than one that's hot on a doe. Sometimes one that's hot on a doe's tail doesn't even realize he's been shot let alone smell you. Even in those close, tight chases when the doe is seemingly running for her life, I've had them turn on a dime because they smelled you. I guess they're better at multi-tasking. I don't want any of them smelling me if I can help it.
 
Mature bucks will, but the does they're after will more. ;) Had a doe circle me nearly 270 degrees while dragging a mature 10 pt behind her, and when I finally got a chance for a shot, she winded me. Stomped her foot once, and he turned and ran about 15 yards, then stopped. Normally that buck would have been in the next zip code within a min, but he just couldn't make himself leave the hot doe he had in sight.

I can think of two mature bucks flat out chasing does,catch my scent,and vacate the are immediately.Mature bucks are different creatures.I wouldn't listen to my buddy.

But you have to factor everything else in. If you only have a couple opportunities to hunt, the chase phase is wide open, and you don't have the perfect wind, go hunt and worry less about the wind.

I agree Mike. I had a spike stop dead in his tracks one year hard chasing a doe, and picked me out of the tree like I was a pink elephant.
 
IMO, A deer's sense of smell is it's most powerful sence and they will always rely on it over their others. Many times a deer will see you or hear you, but they come back. I can't remember ever being winded by a 2.5+ deer and seeing it shortly after.
 
I can guarantee you if you keep scent a priority you are less likely to be winded, regardless of rut. Why take the chance?

That being said... I don't hunt the wind. Where I hunt the wind swirls and changes with every gust, regardless of what the weatherman says. I just do my best to keep my scent to a minimum. Gumoflauge.
 
Had a cruising buck blow at me yesterday. First buck I have ever had blow at me knowingly anyways. He was 2.5-3.5
