Killed him Sunday afternoon just cruising through the timber. I was hunting a different buck, I had no idea this one was around. The rack size wasn't really what I was looking for but I will burn a tag on a mature deer any time I get a chance!

Lol no. I shot him through both shoulders and dropped him and he was about to run to the bottom of the biggest holler on the farm so I shot him in the neck.

Huge studies have been done that show culling has no effect on herd genetics, even after 5+ years.
Some of these Studies have been on places with controlled herds.
The idea that there is a need to remove a deer from the herd in the wild because of genetics is outdated and ineffective.
I think he meant that the buck needed to go because that's as big of a rack as he was ever going to grow. Not that he needed to be taken out to help with herd genetics.

We (or typically I let my daughter or kids eventhough I am not against shooting any mature deer) shoot the older deer with smaller racks not to control our herd genetics but most of these bucks tend to be aggressive on our farm. Plus, big ol mature deer consume alot of food and why do I want inferior rack bucks eating food that bucks that have more potential could be eating? I understand shooting 1 or 2 a year is not going to help a whole lot but it sure is not going to hurt a whole lot. Everyone is entitled to an OPINION.
Anyway, congrats on a mature buck!
