Marlin 30AW Work. Maybe.

Hypothetically what type of work can be done to a Marlin 30AW (Cheaper version of the 336) to help accuracy? I'm not done testing out ammunition yet but if I can't get this thing to shoot I want to know what a gunsmith I unleash upon the rifle could possibly do. Best I can tell it was manufactured in 1989. It has two bands. One over near the front sight and the other on the fore end. The end of the barrel has been scratched up pretty good but I can't tell if there's any crown damage or not.

Basically I just don't know what can be done with a lever action rifle to help improve accuracy. Just looking for ideas.

Have you,

Checked to make sure those sights are "Tight","Straight" and "Aligned" as they should be??? Have seen front beads be loose,bent or both. Alot of those use flip down rear sights which can get loose on the pivot point.

Shot it with a scope?

Cleaned it good?

The "crown" looks like it might need some dressing up.

Didn't think of this but the Barrel Bands might too tight or loose.They should be snug,with light tapping with a hammer and punch required to remove or put back but not a sleadge hammer.

BTW and I forgt this ,my bad, the Actions can be slicked up/polished for smoother working.Trigger work done can be done to.

You state more accurately? How accurate is it shooting now? Will it group a pattern? What caliber is it?

Thanks for the help so far, guys. I should have clarified things in my first post but I was in a rush. It's a 30-30. This was my dad's first rifle he bought back in 1995 when we first started hunting. We got him a new Marlin 336 this year so I'm thinking of turning the old 30AW into a back up rifle for both of us.

It shoots "ok" but his new one far exceeds it. It'll kill a deer at 100 yards no problem but I'm just used to a tighter group. I'm a perfectionist with that kind of thing. I'm going to get a new scope for it, give it a major cleaning, check the bands, and take it back to the range. However if it's still only doing "ok" I just wanted to know if having some work done (Re-crowning was my only idea) would be an option. As old as it is and since we bought it used nearly 14 years ago I figured it might be due for some tuning up.
