My gun shoots Hevi straight 6's and Magblends equal almost down to the pellet so I went with 6's. Partially due to the fact that I've read about guys cutting open Magblends and finding everything from pellets the size of 9s up to pellets the size of 2s. Anybody here ever cut one open? Do they supposedly put in equal amounts of 5, 6, and 7 shot? I buy Magblends for my son and they kill 'em dead so I'm not knocking blends. Just curious.

I haven't but have had a few buddies. They found it's usually 7s heavy but for the most part fairly consistent.

I think it's pretty much a "coin toss" in the overall effectiveness of those straight 6's vs. their Mag Blends. The scales possibly tip slightly toward the Mag Blends, only because they have a little higher velocity. If they'd just leave out the #5 pellets from their Mag Blends, it would really trump their current straight 6 load.

Yep some of there "5's" are as big as 2's and some of there "7's" are as small as 9's but they kill like crazy

Never cut one open, but I honestly could care less about the makeup if all of them consist of the blend I have shot in the past (3.5"). From my experience, they'll thump a turkey's noggin plenty hard enough, probably overkill for 40 and under shots. I have nothing but good things to say about the MBs I have shot over the last few years.

Don't tell me that! They work so I don't guess it matters but when I pay premium price I want a consistent product.

I agree, I dont like it, but they are good shells and that's what I'll be shooting out of my 925 this year as I dont wanna try to buy all the components to load them.

Loading for the 10 gauge was an expensive venture on initial setup but made since with ammo availability but not so much for the 12. Shoot the magblends or the 6s both will kill further than you need to shoot

I have a bunch of #5s I cut out of straight "#5" shells I'll pour out a sample and post a pic when I get a chance

My first thoughts are your too tight. HTL shot really performs with much wider chokes than people think. I have not shot the Jellyheads, but my first choice for a test pattern would be a Gobblin Thunder in .670.

I don't have a problem. I'm perfectly happy with my set up and have done extensive choke testing. I will put my patterns up against most. I was simply asking if anyone here had cut open a magblend to check pellet size consistency and how many 5,6, and 7 pellets are in each shell. I'm not sure where you read that I needed choke recommendations.

I tend to agree about them performing with wider chokes than people think. Let me preface this by saying I typically will only shoot inside of 30 yards thus I use a modified choke. I was with a buddy trying for a double and he had already killed. The other turkey was paralleling us and not getting any closer so I squeezed off a shot and killed him graveyard dead. I stepped it off at 67 paces which would probably on my stride be close to 70 yards. Not a shot I would advise but what those shells will do even in a modified choke is amazing.

I'm lost in my own thread! I didn't ask for choke suggestions and I certainly didn't ask for folks bragging about unethical, ridiculous shots!

I ASKED HAS ANYBODY CUT A MAGBLEND OPEN TO SEE WHATS INSIDE!!

Lol I haven't cut the magblend open but I have collected out of a shot trap. I've cut open a bunch of 5s I can't really give any in depth info on the magblends because of the way I collected shot. But I'll tell you if the 6's pattern as well as the mags I'd use those.

I do know that magblends loaded early in the year have more 7s than mags loaded later in the year. After nitro orders and they fill all the reloading supply stores needs the later loaded shells dont show as dense of a pattern.

I keep a couple boxes of 3" magblends for my 12 gauge in case I want to carry it but I haven't been bored or curious enough to cut one open.

Lol anyone want to see a cut open copper plated #5 lead? Just over $1/shell

I've cut open a bunch of those
did you reload with them?

Yup
Y'all need to stop derailing the thread. He didn't ask about a copper plated lead #5. :D

To answer the original question no and I don't plan to.

SpurHunter.... you should really try a Hevi .662 or JH .665 with those magblends... :D ;)

Oh... wait..... back on track...

I think some guys posted about cutting shells open on OG.... you could try a search of the threads and see what comes up. If you want to check out another "hangout".... GobblerNation.com may have some info too.

I guess I saw your comment "how many are in there" to mean in the target, my bad.

No problem man. I was asking about product consistency.
