M1A question

As you know i have just got an M1A and have a question about it,I have not got to shoot it yet either.Anyway,when you pull the bolt all the way back until it locks in place,to get it to go back foward i have to drop my magazine down just a little bit so i can press the magazine release all the way in to release the bolt.Is this normal?Not sure if i should be pulling it all of the way back to chamber a round.I have tried to explain this the best i can,so help.....
 
yep it locks so you can throw another zipper of rounds down its throat,havent handled 1 in years,still a aweson firearm for sure,mike243
 
The thing is that the bolt will not go back foward unless i pull the magazine down a little bit.I was told that if you have ammo in the magazine that it will go foward without haveing to pull the magazine down a little bit.

thats the way its supposed to work
 
When the bolt is locked back, pull back on the operating handle and press the follower down with the other hand. CAREFULLY let the bolt down and get your fingers out of the way.

Ditto, with an emphasis on the get your fingers out of the way. Once I was too slow with a Hakim which has a similar magazine system. Ouch!
 
Now will i have to pull the magazine down when it has a loaded magazine in it?I just need to get this thing out and fire it some and work with it.I just noticed it while i was looking it over and thought it was odd.
 
When firing the weapon and the magazine runs empty and the last round is ejected the bolt will lock and stay locked to the rear. When you insert a loaded magazine and rock it rearward to seat it the bolt will remain locked to the rear until you either press the bolt release on the left side of the receiver or pull the charging handle to the rear about 1/4 inch. A lot of the previous posters advice is geared to the M1 Garand not the M1A ;)
