I should not have killed this bird.
Beat the other hunters to this spot on my lease. Heard a bird gobble twice in pitch black 600y away about 400y off the property. Moved in 150y and waited 50y off the property. I guess it was the original bird I heard, but when he finally gobbled he was 200y farther south than I thought initially. Looked to be right on top of a neighbors food plot. He gobbled 25x on the limb, expected him to get limb lifted at any second (one got limb lifted in the exact same spot last year). Right before flydown, I called to him, but he ignored me. He gobbled twice on the ground, but sounded a bit further away. Still ignored my calls. I pushed all the way to the line toward him, called a bit, no answer.
Moved back to my original spot, called again, no answer.
I was just texting a buddy I was debating whether to stay on this bird off the property vs going on a wild goose chase to try to find another bird on the lease before heading to public at 10a.
Looked up from my phone, and there he was all colored up 10y away from my flank. Facemask off, earpro off, gun in lap.
I cocked the hammer as I raised my new 12g, and he just stood there, let me put the dot on his neck, and kill him.
Feels great to have gotten an early bird, as I struck out completely in Mississippi last year.
And a bonus, I saved him from a dishonorable death at the neighbors feeder.
Oh, and for any of you guys contemplating ditching TSS, the Savage 301 12g is a DREAM to carry.
