i have a early 90s black max the motor stay in reverse while the shifter is in nuetral.it will continue to spin in reverse until i trim it up until the prop gets close to the top of the water then it will go into nuetral and i can shift it into reverse then but not into forward. anyone had similar issues? or have any idea as to where to start looking.
 
Sounds like your linkage may be off.

Check the shifter cables where they attach under the cover. May have come off the mount or otherwise need adjusting.

That is the first place I would check. Hopefully a retaining clip came off and it can easily and cheaply be put right. Otherwise you will need better advice to start trouble shooting more involved problems.

Have you disconnected the cables or dropped the lower unit prior to the problem starting?
 
no i havent took nothing apart yet but it shifting atleast it is moving everything i can see without taking stuff apart. havent really had time to work on it yet but just tryin to research it before i start taking stuff apart.
 
thx fot the help. is this a easy fix for someone that has never work on a outboard i usually always take mine somewhere but if its not to bad of a repair i might try to fix this on my on.
