I wonder how many deer are poached each year, any guesses? I heard many shots near or at dark when I was up there two weeks ago.

Poachers? Lets see Muzzleloader coming up along with rifle statewide. Not to mention draw hunts. Got to sight em in when you can. Parents and kids shoot to spend quality time together. Shooting because its fun and you can. Squirrel season, ducks, birds, coyotes, crows, groundhogs, etc are open/opening. Uhh a couple million gun owners around. Uhh just because its archery season doesn't mean that if you aint bowhunting you cant shoot your gun. Lack of close by range so guess where some have to go to shoot. My suggestion is to deal with it cause welcome to Tennessee where we Tennesseans love our guns and like to shoot. And because of that that doesn't mean we are breaking any laws just doing what we love. And the last I checked the freedom to go on my lease and shoot my guns is just that, my choice. Oh and feel free to stop hunting this great state and go hunt another state we wont mind another I need a hung when I wake up not being around. The rest of us will simply take it for what it is just another noise in the woods, as most us do obey the law. Like the saying goes takes one to know one.
If my comments seem a little harsh it was meant that way. That's what you get for assuming the worst out of what most of the times end up being good people out practicing a freedom that is theirs and enjoying that freedom.
Oh and one more thing. A hunting forum is not the best place for anti gun rants. Not anti gun? Hummm if you use the words describing the shooting of guns is committing a criminal act or someone aint got no business shooting their guns or guns don't belong in the woods, etc. Hummm
Oh almost forgot this also. I will be sighting in a muzzleloader and my sons rifle for juvenile season this weekend and there is probably going to be someone bowhunting that will be able to here the noise so when you call then game warden for me poaching tell him I'm about 6 foot and 250lbs and will probably be accompanied by a shaddy looking 8 year old.

Well Winchester is making Bows now....
I don't get home till 6 in the evening. My son is waiting on me to shoot his deer rifle or shotgun. We don't shoot everyday, mostly on the weekend, but it is late in the evening when we shoot. We also only shoot only a few shots as his frame doesn't like the kick of his deer rifle. So 3 or 4 shots and we're done. I know the neighbors have to think we're poachers.

I'm sure some of it is just shooting for the sake of shooting. If you got any experience at all you can easily tell the difference by sound in weapons, nobody is goose or squirrel hunting with a high powered rifle or muzzle loader.
I'm lucky i don't have this much in my home area but where I'm at in KY, the Amish think deer season means rifles period all year.

I've heard several loud bows too. Or people are sighting in their centerfire rifles with a single shot right at daybreak or just before dark. Possible right?

I can understand zeroing rifles or hunting other game but when you only hear 1 shot at prime time it's easy to assume that shot may have been taken at a deer.

It could have been someone checking a muzzleloader. For ky muzzleloader season. I always check mine every time and it is useally still on from last year. But I know some of that does go on.
Im headed to the farm this afternoon to check my mzl for the KY season this weekend. I will likely be shooting it after 4pm, possibly 2-3 shots. I think afternoon shooting is more typical but those right at daybreak single rifle shots have to make you wonder. But of course this is America and shooting our guns is part of our freedom, even if we decide to wait until deer season opens and shoot them at daybreak :roll:

Sorry guys, been out of school for awhile and my understanding of the English language must be a little off. Didn't comprehend that the words in original post actually mean that someone somewhere was standing in the middle of a 20 acre field at dark firing a single shot or shooting a single shot at dark. Must have mist the words dark and other such words that describe the lack of light.
And thanks for enlightening me on the fact that I am upset instead of simply pointing out the fact that a gun shot during bow season can be from numerous things and does not guarantee it to be a sign of poaching.
Oh and since you may have never dealt with law enforcement they generally consider it very helpful to know the most about an individual they are looking for so 'I thought id help with my size so it would make me easier to find on the range since by what seems most to find gospel that since I was shooting a gun during bow season. And I must tell the range owner that since his range, which is located in a field. that he can no longer turn the lights on for people to shoot since nor test fire a round he has hand loaded since we and him are poaching.
And I must disagree with the panties size as you are incorrect. I have found many in my size and just so happen to prefer a certain line from Victory Secrets that have a "comfort" band and a more snug form fitting backside. Those tend not to bunch on me, after all im a hefty fellow.
But at last my lack of intelligence has once again come forth and shown its ugly face as I am adult enough to admit I do not know the reason for every boom I here while hunting.
And thank you on educating me to the fact that I am ignorant and drink heavily. And the fact that there is a lot out there who hunt and know of poachers but lack the testicular fortitude to call the GW but simply eek thru life whining and crying about it.

Everyone on this forum is on the same page pretty much, no need to let little minor understandings coming between anyone, and make this a place of controversy.
Correct me if I am wrong. But we can all agree on the bigger issues at hand. Whether or not these people are poaching, we can all agree that we are about fair chase and legal hunting. We are arguing whether or not the activity of poaching is actually happening. We respect the game we hunt, and do not condone poaching.
We also love guns and shooting, and can agree bonding time with family sighting in weapons or practicing a good shot placement is a good time.
Lets get back to the things we agree on, not the minor disagreements.
Everyone here makes valid points, and nobody is wrong.
