Hello everybody,

I know this is supposed to be the artifact forum, and I hope I'll be forgiven, but I just wanted to show some of my Lost Lakes that I've made. I've been obsessed with flintknapping as a hobby, and I've found that I have just as much fun collecting stone and making "new" ones as collecting/hunting old ones.

The Lost Lake is my favorite point style, especially the first stage unresharpened examples, but I've never been fortunate to find a whole one. I'd probably collapse if I did. Along with getting the flaking "right", the hardest thing about replicating this style is punching in the dogleg notches.

With prime artifact hunting season just around the corner, it seems like things are a little slow in this forum, so I just wanted to post these. Hope no one takes offense!!

Do you mark these in any way to prevent someone from passing as real?

Yes. Diamond scribed on back in the deepest percussion scar with my initials.

Buffalo river and dover are my favorites, especially high quality raw buffalo.
 
Nice! my boss found a lost lake about 50 years ago while plowing. The artifact guy around here told him it was lost lake and in excellent shape. Said it was worth about $20,000 or so. Is that right?

They are some of the more expensive points for sure, but that sounds a little high. But, if its a G10, best of the best for type, serious collectors will pay some serious cash. I'd love to see a picture of it. They are a really rare find, especially if both ears are intact.
 
I'll get a picture next time I'm at his house. The man told him there should have been another one close by if he would have looked. Said it was a burial thing or something.

Cool! If it was found in Humphreys county, it wouldn't surprise me that it is ultra fine. Some of the best points I've ever had the pleasure of seeing have come from there. Also some of the best Ft. Payne and Dover Chert too.

I'd be willing to try. I've never made gun flints before but I've seen it done. I have some rock that will be good blade stock. I tell you, just hang on to your rock and when it warms up in a week or so I'll make a few and send them to you and let you try them out.
 
Between Franklin and Murfreesboro. I'll get a few made this week and if you'll PM the location you want them sent, I'll get them to you, and you can let me know if they spark enough.
