Made an 18 yard shot on a huge buck this morning just after 8:am. He had a good 5 inches of mainbeam outside his ears and a good 10 inches of brow tine. Saw the arrows impact, found an awesome foamy bright blood trail. Followed it for 200 yards and it just stopped. This deer ran into the thicket from hell, that is saw briar, laurel and deadfalls. It's impossible to see anything on the ground. We tried to grid the place out from 9:30 am to 4:pm with no luck. That deer is lying dead in there somewhere. We've probably walked by him a dozen times today. I'm sick to my stomach. :cry: :cry: :cry:

I know the feeling buddy been there and it haunted me for years and still does. Go back in a couple days and see if you can smell him. Hopefully you can recover the rack.

I feel your pain as I lost a big buck last year. He bled like crazy and it looked like the trail was poured from a 5-gallon bucket. He got into a nasty grown up pine thicket never to be found. Spent two days looking for him and it sucks. Hope you eventually get him.
 
Man that sucks, you know he's in there, but somehow they can disappear into the woods like that... if you can find a dog, any dog, would be better than nothing. I hope you find him sooner or later, and sorry for the bad luck. Stuff just happens sometimes, they are tough critters
 
That rain just took out the dog option. The best advice I ever got was to pack a roll of orange flagging tape for instances like this, making 10 yard spreads from last blood. It's helped, but not 100%. It happens to all of us
 
Thanks for all the encouragement. I know a good tracking dog would have been the best bet, but you have to realize that we were physically out of gas from pounding that mountain all day. Buy the time we could have gotten a dog here an then hike back up that mountain, it would have been close to midnight before we could've even started to track. It's not the first one I've ever lost. I've lost four big ones over 45 years of deer hunting. That was my 1st. Cross bow loss. I'm not blaming the equipment or shot placement. It just goes to show you how tough these animals are. I just have to put things in perspective and regroup.
 
I've had the similiar thing happen to me before. Shot a very nice buck which would probably still be my biggest to date. I tucked it in tight behind the shoulder so I thought and watched this buck bed down on the edge of mt. from my stand. I give the animal an hour because he hasn't moved at all that I could see. I get down and start walking to him and about 3/4 of the way there this buck jumps up and goes off the side of a mt by a waterfall!!! I never found that buck. I picked up blood at the bottom of the waterfall but it went away very quickly. I went back for 3 days in a row and never found him. I was very upset.

Yea, we went back today and I sat on a knob were I could observe the area we grided out with flagging tape. It was pretty breezy. Didn't see buzzards, vultures or crows. But we figure it might take a few days for him to get ripe unless he's laying in direct sunlight. It's been real cool at night like in the low 40's and upper 30's. And that laurel, is so thick you have to get down on your hands and knees to search. I'm not gonna hold my breath, but I'll keep checking every now and then.
