Go Smokeless. Whether you get a Savage or a conversion of some sort you wont regret it.

When your settin' out there with ol' Betsy, and a trophy walks out at 200yds, you'll be sayin', "Gosh, I wish I had that long range Savage instead of this old round ball machine".

I've never said that to myself. Tradition means more to me than that and any longer shots can be saved for regular rifle season. ;)

Problem is, the trophy won't wait until rifle season, someone with a long range MLer will take him before you get a chance.

If you want to build an inexpensive smokeless MLer, find yourself a n H&R .45-70 single shot, send the barrel along with a Savage smokeless breech plug to a chap in N.C. called Slufoot. He will machine the barrel & install the breech plug, head space it and ship it back to you for about $80-90 bucks. He does excellent work & has a very quick turnaround time.

I would keep my eyes open for a good clean used one. You can save hundreds and they will still kill the heck out of deer.

Use all that money saved on the gun to go for a good scope.

Also, keep it simple. Pellets or loose powder, sabots and xtp bullets are proven performers.

lets say that you plan to 600.00 on the total rig. you could buy a 300.00 t/c or cva and a 300.00 scope.i ould say buy a 550.00 savage and buy a 50 scope. it will still serve u better. when you get the dough, throw away the scope and get a better one

You'll spend less time sighting it in (and with fewer shots required), you'll spend less time cleaning it, not to mention, you'll spend less on smokeless powder simply because it cost less.

I only wish I had bought my Savage sooner, and the Savage is not much more cost initially over many of the others.

TC impact 50cal can be bought for under $240 brand new from sportsmans warehouse, but after owning a savage that's what I would personally suggest. Buy the best and be done with it!

just bought a CVA optima and put a nikon prostaff on it. spent about $500 for gun, scope and a sling that has the speed clips. i got the stainless barrel, too.

if you're going to buy one, buy it now at bass pro.. it was $289 period. they reduced the price of the gun by the tax amount, so you pay what its listed for. i'm really excited about the gun.
