I�m in the market to finally purchase a muzzleloader, I�ve borrowed a friend�s the last 2 years. I have done some research and what I�ve found is that no matter what you get the key is to clean the gun religiously after every few shots at minimum. I�ve been told that it would be smart to get a stainless barrel to help the life of the gun due to corrosions but I�m not really looking to spend $500 on a gun at this time. Any recommendations for a good gun that is a reliable shooter assuming I do my part to keep up with the cleaning? Is it really that important to go with a non blued barrel? I would like to keep this under $300. Thanks for any info you guys can share.
 
Seen a wolf for sale in the classifieds for $130..You don't need stainless steel.Just clean it after you shoot it every time and you'll be good to go.You can find some good deals on used ones.Check www.gunownersclub.com

Walmart has the blue wolf $167. I have been looking for a good used one on goc for my brother, and I can't beat walmart.
 
A good friend of mine bought the T/C Impact ($250) few years back and he has been thoroughly impressed with it thus far. He set his gun up exactly as described in this article, with the exception of the scope (same load, same dial in, etc). I have witnessed him shoot it at the range (out to 150 yards) and I have witnessed him kill three does with it in a field (50-100 yard shots) and I must say I have been impressed too. Furthermore, it is a breeze to clean, unlike the black powder guns I shot back in the day. Best of luck with your final choice.

come get it, i'll take $120.
just got an optima and don't need it but it's almost worth the $130 to me to have it available if a buddy, kid, or wife want to borrow it for a hunt.

The quick release breech plug is absolutely awesome, i would not have a modern muzzleloader with out it now.

Just clean the rifle after you shoot it and it'll probably last a lifetime, if not CVA is pretty good about their lifetime warranty.
I sat it to the side after running triple 7 through it; and forgot about for 2 weeks under a towel in the garage first season i had it which is how the breech area got a little cruded up, probably still better than 90% of the used muzzleloaders you will find out there. I'm pretty anal about my stuff and it bugs me that i let that happen. Doesn't seem to bother it's shooting ability though.

I went with an impact a couple years ago as well, absolutely love it. Simple, easy to clean (using BH209) and accurate.
 
Thanks Guys for all of the great info. I found a CVA Optima Stainless at Walmart that I will buy. It seems like that is the best of both worlds and gets great reviews from most on the site. Thanks again, good luck this season!
