I found one at Smoky Mountain Gun Works.
Went to the range. The new S&W 686-7 Plus Mountain Gun shot pretty well. It had a tad more recoil than my 686-6 Plus. The Mountain Gun comes in about 5oz. lighter than the standard 686. The esthetics of the Mountain Gun are very pleasing to the eye. It's what caught my attention first. I did a few comparison pics. What do y'all think?
I have one in .45 Colt. I really like them.
That's a nice looking gun. I personally like the heavy barrel of the standard 686. For something lighter the Model 66 would be my choice. Although that Mountain gun looks like a K-Frame barrel with a little heavier cylinder and frame. You must think it recoils too much if you are looking at porting threads?
Bottom line is it's a Smith & Wesson stainless revolver. It just doesn't get any better than that. I'm sure you will be happy.

I will probably get used to the recoil. After reading about porting I am still on the fence. I would like to shoot a gun that has been ported. What has me on the fence is people talking about gasses and lead flying in your face. I just really can't see that happening and was wondering if that is either arm chair quarterbacking or a poor job being done by the gunsmith. If the angles are cut right, I don't see how a person would have stuff flying in the face.
Gasses already escape closer to you between the barrel and cylinder ,5" farther away ain't gonna bother you
That's my reasoning too. I just don't see that as a problem. I'm guessing these are armchair quarterbacks talking nonsense.

I think Magnaport would be the way to go if you want it ported. They have been doing it for a long time.

I looked at them last night. If I decide to get it done, I will use them. They seem to be an industry leader.

I do not but I would have considered buying one if I had found one but now that Colt has released the new Anaconda in 45 Colt, I'm no longer interested in the Smith.
This must be the age of retro. Look at the muscle cars being produced that look more the the great cars of old. And now the guns are bringing back the great guns.
Yeah. Definitely interesting times. Id probably still buy a mountain gun if I found one in 45 Colt depending on the price. I ve always liked the look of them.

Nice gun, no doubt. I prefer the full lug barrel version of 686's.
The recoil is definitely tamed with the extra weight. I was going to sell mine after I got the MG back. But I think I will keep it.

Poor man's Colt Snake Gun! That's the only comparison that I have for the smoothness of the GP100 acton of the one that we have.A Ruger GP100 in .357M
SWEET wheel gun(s)!! Just remember that if you ever shoot it at night, a ported barrel will add considerably to "night blindness" due to the upward muzzle flash.
