looking for a bullet for my .45 mz

ive got an encore .45 and i shot the powerbelt platinum 223 gr's last year and they totally suck. i lost a good 8pt during first mz and lost a doe last mz.
i used the hornady sst's 250gr in my .50 cal and i bought the same bullets in .45 but you almost had to stand up on the end of the ram rod to get the dang things in so thats why i swapped to the powerbelts.

now im looking for something else in a .45 any help would be appreciated because i cant find hardly anything.
i wish they made the new hornady sabots that are supposed to be easier to load in a .45 but to my understanding its only in .50 right now.

to add a little note the 2 deer i lost with the powerbelts had the same blood trail almost. it was good at first then just steadily started going away until it was totally gone.
i tracked one of the deer all the way from one side of my land to the other way over 1/2 mile

My 45 Encore has been pretty tough to fine tune. I ended up shooting the 223 Platinums like you are shooting and had decent results with them. I shot a doe and that bullet did a great job. Also shooting 777 pellets. I have however been looking at prbullet.com and will probably end up trying some of theirs this year. I called and talked to them one day and they were very helpful but for the life of me I cant remember what they suggested?

i read on bps website about the 223gr powerbelts and one guy said it was exploding on impact and not penetrating the skin? he said he was having the same problems as i did.

i found some on bps they were thompson center mag express 180gr sabots. they say they are easier to load than the other sabots i may try them out.

I highly recomend the xtp style saboted bullets like in your bps link. They're cheaper than most, usually deadly accurate, and excellent penetration performance. I doubt you'll be dissappointed with them.

I had a 250 xtp frag on impact at 2,600 fps + and the deer died. 6"- 8" whole on impact and no exit - bullet failed, but deer still died.

I think a lot of the pb failures people report are just bad shots.

There is no way a pb is worse than an arrow-

not say im the best shot but ive been hunting for 15 years and never lost a deer until now.
i make sure my guns are sighted in and i shoot every deer in the same vacinity.
funny how i shot a 9pt with my .270 and the hornady dropped him in his tracks in the same spot i shot the 2 deer with my mz

Barnes .45 Cal 195gr Expander. Knight did offer them in 195 & 175 gr.

Feel the same on them,and that can go for other bullets btw,but ther does seem to be love'em or hate'em with the PB's.

well i reckon i have been lucky but i dont do shoulder shots,not with any rifle.i put it in the ribs & have shot then thru the front end as well as broad side,i wont shoot another straight down thru the back any more as it ruins alot of meat,the dang bullets are $ & im glad i dont have to search for 1 that loads & shoots good.hope you find 1 that does good for you,mike243

I'll have to agree, a bullet doesn't make everyone a good shot away from the target range and in the woods. My brother is a good shot, but when it comes to his ML, he's sucks. He hardley ever shoots it, then when he does he's all over the place. He could shoot the greatest bullet of all times and I'd still put my money on the deer!

I have experienced bullet failure with both the Savage 10ml2 and Hornady Light Magnum rounds out of a .270 - I still recovered all the deer I pulled a trigger on.

Deer are easy to kill, put a stick where it needs to be and the deer will die.

I am just saying that I don't buy into the fact that its all the bullets fault.

I don't shoot them because there are better bullets for my purposes (better bc and tough).

I would like to try other bullets in my 45 encore, couldn't find any that you could load without cleaning between shots. I had a hard time getting a shockwave down a clean barrel. I've had good luck with the PBs, but would be nice to have some options.

Have you tried a dry patch/spit patch between shots? It worked for me-

Also, you may try that same bullet with a different sabot (MMP). Take your caliper and measure your current saboted bullet and measure land to land of your barrel.

You want a sabot/bullet that is the land/land dimension. You can get there by switching sabots and/or knurling bullets.

I'll do a little experimenting this summer. It's not that i'm lazy, but it can get really cold here during hunting season, I prefer not to have to run the patches down my barrel between shots. I haven't tried any differant bullets over the last few years and I know they have really changed with the popularity of the sport. I'll have to make a few trips to Cabelas and Bass Pro this summer and try a couple differant ones.
