Look like a dead deer?

Shot a good buck at 630 this morning. Dropped in his tracks and just like last Saturday this buck gets up as I'm about to go down the tree. Tracked blood then lost it so backed out then came back found him bedded down in the creek bottom about 100 yards but it was one of those we see each other at the same time and he runs along the creek. Backed out til about 11. He bled good then it slowed up as he went to private. Finally got in touch with the owners and got the go ahead right before dark. Hoping he's where I think he is. Liver?

Yes sir, liver if I was betting. I'd say he's dead. As long as you didn't push to hard I'd imagine you'll find him not far from where you jumped him.

Never seen a liver hit deer drop on impact. What did you shoot him with? I really hope you find him but man it's hard to imagine a bullet impact to vitals hard enough to knock him down but not kill him within seconds. A bad backstrap hit would bleed dark, bleed a lot, knock him down, but not kill him. Hopefully I'm wrong and you find him dead as a doornail.

With a rifle? Never had one live very long with a rifle liver hit, doesnt llok like enough blood to me for liver, hope im wrong and uou are loading him up right now, good luck

I'd say he's likely within a couple hundred yards of where you last saw blood. I shot one similarly one season but he never acted hit tho, but I found slight blood about 25-30 yards in the direction that he ran. It got a little heavier with each bound he made, and I eventually found him about 175-200 yards later. Good luck!

This. Odd for a liver hit deer to drop. Generally if they drop then get up its spine shock so maybe high. Hopefully not "no man's land" those areas bleed dark and bleed decent for 100 to 200 yards in my experience. But deer do weird things when hit some times. It's way cold enough to let him lay over night. Generally liver hit deer need around 8 hours. Hopefully liver and I hope you find him.


How did he act when you bumped him? Really hurt? Did he run off with his tail tucked or up? Blow at you? All of that could be important to.

Wouldn't be surprised at all when you find him if it's a little back, and you caught liver and part of one lung.

They can go a long ways with just one lung.

In my experience a deer that drops dead, lays there for a minute and then gets up is a lost deer. I have shot 2 and known of several others that did this and in every case we lost the deer. It's more than likely a high shot that clipped the spine but didn't sever the cord. They usually recover from these wounds. I wasn't there so I can't say for sure but it sure sounds familiar. Hope you find him though.

Ive have all the deer rifles- 243, 7mm08, 308, 25-06, 270 win, 30-06, 30-30 and the list goes on. All are great. My go to is 7mm08 mwinly becauee its short action, and can still shoot a high sectional density bullet. I have one is the mimber 84 which is a 5 3/4 pound rifle. The issue is never tge round, and rarely the bullet. Its us and we all have been there. Hope u find him. Luckily the cold weather shoudl preserve him

I'd guess backstrap through a spinal process, stunning the deer's nervous system but he quickly recovers. The dark blood is also indicative of backstrap blood.

And this is exactly why when I drop one now I immediately chamber another round and get back on target. If he starts kicking or raises his head he gets another one.

Lol, I don't have good service there. It's an hour from my house so haven't been on here since last night. We looked for 5 hours and found more blood. He had to jump in a creek to bypass a blowdown. That same side had hoof prints going down the bank before the blowdown and coming up the bank behind the blowdown. the opposite side of the creek had prints. Both sides were recent. We lost blood after that. I only had a little bit to work with on the property I had access to which didn't follow the creek enough. If he stayed on the same path in which it very well looks like he did then he is on the property I can't get on, if he is dead. Puzzles me on the deer bedding down maybe 200 yards from impact on the creek bottom when I bumped him. I've never dealt with backstrap shots. My buck last week was hit high laid there and got back up. I should have put another round in him yesterday but that was at 90-100 yards with only his back right ham barely showing. So that didn't even cross my mind.

I could not see anything of him but a back ham from the 90-100 yards. I was going down tree when he had got up.
