Longest shot and kill on deer with centerfire?

First off, I'm not saying that every hunter should bang away at deer at ultra long range. But, here goes. My longest shot and kill was on a big doe at 348 yards with a .30-06 several years ago, using a handload with Hornady 150 gr. Interlock. My next longest kill was just 230 yards.

169 yards right up the butt shot on a 5.5 8pt that was not fixing to stay in the field long. I shot as he was quickly moving across the field, thought i had missed but later found out i just grazed his stomach. He stopped for a split second before entering the pines and he only presented me with a "Texas heart shot". He hit the ground and never moved.

Right around 300 yards. I don't have a rangefinder but the deer was standing at the spot I've stepped off as 300 yards for rifle zeroing many times so I consider it a 300 yard shot.

Rifle was a Remington 700CDL in 257 Weatherby with a Barnes 100 grain TTSX over 72 grains IMR 7828 for 3,590fps. Zeroed about 2.5" high at 100yds, it's still hitting about 1" high at 300yds.

2nd longest shot was 185yds with a 270Winchester 130gr Nosler BTip and max load of IMR 4831 or 4350 (don't recall without being able to look at the ammo box)

How does that 100gr TTSX perform as far as terminal effect at those longer ranges? I shoot a handloaded 110gr Accubond right at 3250fps out of a 25-06 that is about as close to a lightning bolt as I've ever witnessed.

Every single deer has responded as if they had just eaten an instantly poisonous soybean or kernel of corn. DRT.

I was concerned about the TTSX opening up at longer ranges myself. Not that one shot proves anything but in that one case, the bullet seemed to work perfectly. The deer was a button buck :blush: so it was small and it was broadside hit just behind the shoulder. Point being that all I hit was ribs, so the bullet was stressed as little as possible and it still opened up enough to give a nice 3/4" exit hole. The little buck ran about 40 yards in a wild dash back to the woods. I've never seen such a blood trail. It looked like you had sloshed blood from a bucket.

For the most part, with my normal deer rifles (25-06, 257W and 270Winchester) I've only got instant kills where the deer dropped in it's tracks with Nosler Partitions. Most shots I get a 40 to 50 yd run then they drop. The 300 grain Barnes conventional bullet in a max load in the 460 Weatherby drops more in their tracks but not all of them - and that bullet is soft enough that it expands to close to an inch sometimes so it's dumping some serious energy in a deer.
