Got out there early this morning and just listened for about 20 mins at first light. Nothing - woods were dead. Decided to make the hike to the ridgetop and walk & call to see if I could get anything to respond. Walked out the ridge about 1/4 mile and bumped a hen back to her roost. Not too spooked so I just sat down thinking a gobbler might have been nearby. Called softly a couple of times and he sounded off back the way I came! Decided to abandon the hen and walked about 100 yds back. Looking through the trees to a field I had passed 20 mins earlier and I see red, white, and blue about 60 yds. Threw up the binoculars and sure enough! Head and beard plainly visible thru the leaves. There i stood in the open timber with no cover and a gobbler giving me the stank eye! He turned, strutted, and I hit the ground and aimed. 2 clucks with a double D mouth call and shut up. Walked to within 35 and boom!! Good beard, good spurs and heavy! Not measured nor dressed yet. Will follow up with the tale of the tape.
