long range shooting help (MOA)

wanting to try and shoot my first 1000yrd shot not even sure i can see the target at that distance but couple buddys are wanting to play around and see how we do. Now im looking for help im shooting a remmy 700 300wsm with a trijicon 5.5x20x50 i dont no much about moa adjustment my scope says 1/4 moa if gun is zerod at 100yds would i have to come up 28 moa adjustment to get me close? im a green horn at this moa stuff been reading but its confusing this country boy so someone help me with this moa adjustment

Let me add how I came up with 28moa let's say my gun shoots 280 inchs low at 1000yds and if gun is zeros at 100yds.
So at 1000yds one moa is 10in? Am I doing it correct?

1 clic would = 2.5" wouldn't it? 112 clic's if your drop is 280" never tried over 350y with my redfield/243 combo but it was rite on but forgot to put in the wind drift,good luck that stuff can be habit forming,just ask Mr Big lol

Pending on the bullet weight, lets say you are shooting a 180 gr bullet, it will drop @ 300.5 inches at 1000 yds if zeroed at 100.

In order to get the bullet to hit dead on at 1000 yds you will need to be @ 30" high at 100. So, @ 120 clicks up on the scope.

The bullet arch looks like a freaking rainbow, over 100" high at 600 yds. LOL

With a 300 Win Mag loaded with 190 SMKs at 3180 fps. The 1000 yard zero is 15" high and 1" to the left at 50 yards. With no wind.

I have a question. Will a standard scope have enough adjustment to shoot dead on at 1000 yds? Wouldn't you need to have the scope mounted on the gun at an angle and the scope zeroed near the bottom of the reticle range? My scope a ziess conquest can only be doped out to 600 yds.

Known velocity would help and getting a feel for the wind. The wind would be harder to adjust for than anything else. 1/4 moa at 100 is basically 1/4" at 100. That is not entirely true but it'll get you very close.

Yeah, there are special bases that build in XX elevation and all of the math has to be done with your scope capability and the intended shooting distance before you buy.

You will be looking at scopes with external turret adjustments and getting turrets custom made for your favorite load ballistics. Better get a chrony also since you need to know FPS.

The trick is repeatability. Can you turn your turret elevation from 1,000 down to 300 or 600 and then back up to 1,000 with complete confidence you will bang steel.

Also start learning about stuff like Sectional density and Ballistic co-efficient, epat, neck tension, and even humidity.

Its a great hobby and because it is challenging to your skills and ability it can be a lot of fun. First time you hear that steel ring is something you'll never forget

That's the same thing I'm trying to get into, I'm gonna order some 20 moa bases for my 260 today and I'm looking at a vortex hs-t 4x16x44 to put on it. Im sure the 16 power will be enough just to bang steel. The only thing that concerns me is the open scope turrets, I'm gonna take it hunting just worried the turrets will hang a limb and twist.

I'm sure I can rig something up to cover them though.

i hunt with open turrets never had one move the zeiss has very positive clicks

and if it did move when i get in the tree i check where im at

and a few clicks aint gonna make a difference less than 200 yds with most rifle cartridges

First rule, don't count clicks. Look at your scope and if it says 1/4 MOA, you know what each click represents. Now, look at your turrets and spin it until you have spun to the 28 MOA mark. If one revolution of the turret is 14 MOA, you'll need to spin it two full revolutions. In other words, read the big number on the turrets and go from there.

Remember that MOA measurements are a constant whether at 100 yards or 2000 yards. Therefore, reads the turrent numbers and that will give you MOA at that distance. Try to equate inches and clicks will get get you lost.

to be precise you need to know the bc of the bullet and the speed it is traveling

ie

my 7 saum 168 berger vld .617 bc @ 2765 fps

i need 30.43 inches @ 100 to hit 1000

so if my rifle is set up dead on @ 100 and knobs zeroed at zero
id turn them to 30.5

this method worked good at 500 and 680 never shot farther than that

does not take in for wind drift of course and scope repeatability

your scope may not track accurate that far out

my leupold mark 4 tracked great to 680 and my zeiss tracks great so far out to 400 (farthest ive shot with it)

got to have an accurate rifle but got to have a dang good scope

you are on the right track,,I have a 4.5-14 LR/M1 on my 338 and with a 100 zero I have over 80 MOA adjustments on the knobs,,takes me 29 to make a 1,000 and 54 to get the 1525 plate at Rockcastle,,I think it would adjust dead on at a mile but dont have a place to try it,,

I have the same scope on my 223 and it has held zero and comes back dead on every time,,and I run it way up and out a lot,,
