A good quick start would be to get Mr. Big to list some of his equipment such as the high dollar rests, scopes & mounts to name some of the most important. Rifle stocks with wide flat forearms and long sleek bullets go a long way to making you into a long range shooter. Equipment makes a big difference. But that stuff is expensive as I'm sure you are aware. I spent nearly $2,000 on a rifle, scope, dies and cases back in 1988 when I bought a Remington 40X rifle in my quest to have the ultimate semi factory/semi custom varmint rifle. It has the stock for bench shooting and it made it way easier to shoot consistent tiny little groups right away simply because of how steady the rifle would sit on a rest.

I don't follow any forums on the subject though so can't recommend any. I'm sure there are some very opinionated peckerwoods on some of them given the current interest in being a sniper. Even those guys probably have some info that is worth listening to.

just shoot man ,I used to think a milk jug at 500 was the outer limit,,past 500 you will see it is more about bullets and optics and a good consistent technique

go to youtube and watch everything by Erik Cortina,,


go somewhere and watch them shoot long range,,we dont do anything fancy we just try and have fun with it,,

I would almost bet money you could take a Rem 700 Sendero type factory rifle with good optics and whatever 180 gr factory ammo it liked best and hit steel at 1000 yards,,with some mods and 210-215 gr handloads it would be an outstanding long range rig,,probably equal the 6.5 Creedmoor with twice the recoil,

the glass in the Ziess may be a little better but for the type shooting you are doing the Vortex is plenty and I actually like the FFP and the adjustments on the Vortex better,,just make sure it is mil/mil or moa/moa ,

look at the 6-24 FFP Sightron also,,,my 8-32 is very good and tracks at least as good as a Mark 4

Thanks. This is actually the route I am planning. I am not interested, yet, in any competitions, just want to shoot to have fun and get better. I just bought a Remington 700 Long Range in 30-06 that I am going to mod a little bit and then just practice and shoot.

Do you have any experience with the Vortex Viper PST with FFP? I am looking at one in 6-24X50 and was wondering if you have used or seen one. The other option would be a Zeiss Conquest HD in 5-25x50?????

I recently got a Bushnell XRS 4.5-30 for a good deal, but if I hadn't, I would've bought that PST. They're good stuff.

Are you wanting to learn how to actually shoot long range (different positions and environments), or build a gun to put in a vise and pull the trigger?

I have the 4-16 pst in sfp. They are really good scopes. The 6-24 is supposed to better glass than the 4-16. Another line of scopes to consider is the swfa line of SS scopes. They have a 5-25x50. I have the 3-15x42 ffp which is probably a little better than the vortex.

Well, I am now looking at the Vortex PST and HS-T. I don't need the illuminated reticle and can't find a ton of other difference between the 2. I am also strongly considering the 4-16 and I don't know that I need 24 power on the high end.

I have a Vortex Viper HS-LR, 4-16X44 on my 300WM.
For a hunting rifle I didn't need the exposed turrets that are on the HS-T.
The 4-16 covers more than enough and going with a 44mm cuts down on size and weight just a little. Plus, you can mount a 44 lower on the receiver with the smaller objective lens.

16x is plenty as long as you are not expecting to see the bullet holes on the paper at 500 yds.
