Hello Boys!!! Been awhile since I've been on here, got a ? For ya'll. I've shot a 300win mag for along time and then went to a 270. Did a little renovation to my hunting property and now have some large to me food plots. I want to set my 300 up for this, I shoot an A-bolt 300win. With 220 grain hornady. My usual shots were 80yards. But now I have some 200-800 yard shots. What do I need to do to be able to shoot these ranges? Bullet weight? What yardage to set scope? etc..... If I can kill from 100-500 I'd settle for that. I really hope to hear from DA on this!! Thanks guys!

I own a Browning 300 WinMag with the BOSS and I shoot exclusively hand loaded 180 grain Nosler Partitions, Max load of IMR7828 not the sc, Fed 215M primers, Leupold 3.5x10x40, trigger worked on. Chronyed at near 3000 FPS. 2 inches high at 100 I am good for up to 300 yards. I don't think I can see a deer at 400 yards. Pretty soon I'm going to qualifying on the MSSA long range when I get the BOSS upgraded.

You need to understand your ballistics and know distances so mark you property in some way. To get to that 500 and up mark you need a couple of pieces of equipment and the time & place to practice. Mr. Big is your source for that kind of info.

BTW, my rounds are loaded out so far I have one in the chamber and one sitting in the magazine. Too long for two.

Should be able to get out to 500 yd with a little practice. First I would load and purchase some ammo with 168 Berger VLDs,(this is just my personal favorite) then I would get a good piece of glass. Then practice out to the range you plan to shoot and get to know your rifle at those ranges. Anything out to 500-800 yards is a totally different ballgame. Good luck.

Oh forgot to mention I still have the Remington model 7 I purchased from you a few years ago. It has become my favorite treestand rifle. Have done a little work on it since then. You still live out on the mountain?

Rack seeker....good to hear from you and know you still enjoy the rifle. I knew when you shot it bullet hole for bullet hole you was going to buy it. Wish I had kept it now! I moved to Alabama where I'm within 15min of 40,000 acres of hunting but still 30 min of the mtn. I lived on. I still have a 1000 acres on that mtn. So I'm in Hog Heaven!!!! That is the property that I've made the changes to and the reason I need to learn to shoot a lil further! I've put in about 85 acres of food plots on that 1000 acres and added about 100 acres of cover so I just need to learn to shoot!!!! I have a 22-250 that will hit a chigger in the eye at a 100 but I like a bigger chunk of lead for deer. Again, good to hear from you my friend!!

IMO to accomplish this goal

ditch the 220 hndy bullets

I hope you reload if not buy some real good ammo

for 350 or less
I am not real familiar with 30 cal weight in berger vld

but id go 168 vld or with 150 gn accubond

for 350 plus
180 to 200 accubond
208 a max
any thing berger vld 180 plus
chronograph
good no great scope zeiss IMO topped with tactical turrets
good shooting house with rest
light winds pratice
light trigger
point blank ballistic soft ware

i got to find my 500 yd jug shoot with mr big video

IMO i would not shoot over 400 with out actuall knowing my velocity and ballistic data for that round not the crap on th ebox or in a book but real world speed

when it comes to long range shooting i aint crap

tim in tn is the freaking man

eric mr big is a heck of a shot with a 500 yd range in his front yard
ewc judd has a lot of experience as well

there is another fella on here too that is a bad to the bone long range shot he is from mississippi i cant think of his screen name for any thing

Do what you are doing asking questions read all you can about long range shooting and practice. Most of all don't be scared of doing it.

All is welcome to input!!!! So where do I start? Here is all I know so far, drop to 150gr. And put up targets at 100 and just keep backing up. Is that what I need to do? Is there a chart that if you set at 250 it will be on at 500?? Or 2 inch high at 100 is on at 400 ? I'm just asking, because I have no idea. I can hit an imaginary dot at 100 but I never shot 200. Can you guys prop on a knee or tree and do 500 or are you in a gun rest? I just can't freakin hold still at 500. Can you do 500 out of a shooting house? Do I need a bag in there to rest on? Or am I just being paranoid, I can hit a gallon jug at 500 but don't I need to get that in a 3inch circle??? Or is a gallon size target ok?

Ballistics software is a great place to start, but there is no substitute for handloads, a chronograph, a dope chart and a lot of practice. Regardless of bullet, you need one with a very low ballistic coefficient at those ranges. I may speaking out of turn, but there is absolutely no way I could hit a jug at 500 without at least a bipod and stable platform, a knee or tree.....forget it from me. The whole "2 inches high at 300" never made a lick of sense to me, but give me an MOA turret and a dope chart and I'm good to go. I've been working on quick adjustments and a dope for my AR from 100 quick to 565 on an 8" gong. Keep practicing....but not with Kentucky windage. Do it right.

shoot whatever bullet that groups the best in your rifle,,after that the scope is the most important piece of long range equipment,if this is your first attempt at long range start with a scope that is mil/mil and expect to shoot it enough that you can hit an 8 inch gong ever time at the max range you plan to shoot deer,,

speed and B dont really matter if you know the come ups for the load,,5,000 fps and 2.875BC wont help if you dont have confirmed dope at the range your shooting,,

the load I am shooting now is zeroed at 100,,10 MOA gets me 500 and 29 MOA makes 1000,,but banging steel is different than hunting,,with somebody that I am familiar with is on the spotter I can get on at most any range in a couple shots and then bang it pretty good,,but making first shot cold bore hits on an 8 inch gong past 500 is beyond most weekend shooters pay scale,,

500 is about as far as I feel good about taking a shot on a live animal and I shoot a lot,,it would have to be perfect conditions for me to try it at 800,,

the best thing you could do is set up exactly where you will be hunting and make a dope chart from actual data on the scope by shooting it exactly where the deer would be standing,

dope for 800 right here may be 3-4 moa off from dope for 800 25 miles from here..

shoot a bunch and determine your max range ability,,

something else that will help you is to shoot a 22LR at 100 yards a lot and shoot a right smart at 200 with a 22LR,,it will help a BUNCH

mr.big and I spot for each other.Like what was said above practice, practice, practice.I got busy with life and didn't shoot at range for several months and lost it.When shooting at those ranges it's like shooting a pistol. If you don't use it you will loose it.It's not something you do once or twice a year.I have went from making consintant good hits at 1100 yards to crap hits at 300 yards[don't lift wieghts before shooting].Know your gear, know your gear, practice, practice, spend some money on some GOOD optics, learn them, spend a butt load of money ammo, practice, practice, practice. There is no subsitute for trigger time. The wind separates the men from the boys.

All the advise here has been good just don't be scared to try it. I try to P- dog shooting every year, I remember the first time I thought I could never hit a six inch target at 500 pulse yards but when I started shooting every thing came together.

A .270 shooting 130 grain Hornady SST superformance is a good choice check out all the numbers. A flat shooter is always the way to go in my opinion.

Ok, so after the weekend I have to back up a little on my words!! I can hit a gallon jug at 500 every once in awhile!! Lol. I may have to use the sneak a lil closer tactics!

I have a great 270 gun but hate to mess with it. The 300 is just sitting there with nothing to do.

I have been shooting long distances for years for fun. My teacher was a ex ranger sniper... who could do more with a gun than I thought humanly possible when he started teaching me. There is no replacement for time spent shooting your gun. I have a Ruger M77 Hawkeye in 25-06 with the 26 inch bull barrel and a jewel trigger that will drive nails at 300 yards. And I still very rarely will take a shot at an animal over 200. Just personal preference. Find a bullet your gun likes... get the best glass you can afford .. and shoot..shoot..then shoot some more. And as always that's just my happy opinion.

OK so I have a 300 win mag Remington 700 police. My opinion is you have to have good glass. I have a night force 12-42x56 (if I had it to do over I wouldn't get this much magnification. Its nice at 1000 but at 100 its hard to find what your looking for )with a 20 moa picatinny rail I also recommend a good trigger. I have a jewel trigger that is set on 9 oz then of course hand loads. I shoot berger 210gr vld they group decent from 100-300 but really preform well between 300-600 yds I have my rifle zero'd at 300yds which shoots around 6 in high at 100yds.

Download strelok app it is the best ballistics calculator in my opinion. I have made a range card with click per yds in 100 yd increments and laminated it them duct taped it to my cheek piece for quick reference. If I could figure out how to put a video on here I would post one of my wife busting a piece of 12"x12" steel at 600 yds.

I used to think 300 and 400 yds was crazy long range until I started hand loading and started studying ballistics. Now it isn't any fun to shoot less than 500 yds.

I have confirmed kills out to 775yds and have shot steel at 1068yds. Burn powder. Learn your weapon. Leave the scent lok at home and shoot them where they can't smell you
