Long Hunter SP

Anybody get out and put their name in the hat for the Long Hunter State Park archery draw this morning?

I put my name in around 9, drawing was at 1130 but I couldn't stick around.

All I know is the quota hunt screwed up a hunt for me last year during deer season. I frequently use a boat ramp in the park to paddle across the lake to the WMA, but when I pulled up to the ramp there were flashing blue lights and a closed sign. I wasn't trying to hunt Long Hunter, just use a boat ramp there. Oh well...

I dont think its classified as a quota hunt per se. To my knowledge any antlered deer count towards statewide limits and park staff do the drawing.

Weegee- sorry to hear about that. Heres are the dates the park will be closed for the hunts this year. There may be additional dates, but these are what was listed for hunting the different areas.

**For clarification, I dont know if the whole park will be closed these dates, or just the respective area

Zone 1 - Dec 3 to 5
Zone 2 - Dec 10 to 12
Zone 3 - Dec 17 to 19

Some time during muzzle loader season. I just called them in an effort to avoid that situation again. They said that it's the first three weekends in December (Fri/Sat/Sun). But they're doing it in sections. So if the Bryant Grove area is closed then the Couchville area will be open and vice versa.

It is. They held the draw this past Saturday. There wasnt much in the guide about it. It was just listed as a public hunting area with the phone number for more info.

I hear ya. I would've eventually figured this out one way or another, but this site did make that process faster. Don't worry though, I got plenty other spots.

since when did these hunts start happening? I have never heard of such. Is this a separate draw from the quota hunt system? do you have to use your preference points in this drawing?

I would have put in if I knew about it and didn't lose my points I have been saving for PI.

This is exactly why I like it in this instance. I had no clue and live in the area. I guess you have to be part of the good ole boy network to get in on it or sit around reading the guide and it is supposed to be hush, hush. Oh well count another name in the hat next year. If it is a draw that doesn't effect my points (I'll be contacting the TWRA to get the details), then I am putting in.

Its not about the good ole boy network and not hush hush. Everything you need to know is at your fingertips; you just have to be willing to make the effort to find it. It's about paying attention, keeping your ears open and not relying on social media to get your info.

If you check out the map, only the zone/unit indicated will be closed on days that they're having the hunt there. At least that's my understanding.
