Logging & Hunting Question

We've been having some of our farm logged for the last couple of months. They're almost done now. My question is do the deer typically stay far away from these areas or is it good to hunt near their edges or even inside if possible?

It good to hunt the edge or in side the wood line. When I used to work in the strip mines, we had them coming around often. Good luck

Where I hunt, Ames Plantation, there is almost always some logging going on. Over the years, the loggers have seen a lot of deer and some great bucks while working, especially if they are logging Sep-Dec. Unless impenetrable barriers have been created, deer will oftentimes follow the same travel corridors as they did before logging, and you should focus on these areas. I killed a mature buck in a fresh clear cut last December, following the same trail/travel corridor as they traveled over the years pre-logging. The does were using the area as they always had, and a few nice bucks as well. Best of luck to you this year!

Chainsaws and skidders are a deer hunters friends in many many ways...especially if there's a clear cut. You could go hunting in the morning before they start and kill deer.

I've heard tell that there has been more than one killed out of a skidder. We had one guy on our lease kill a buck out of a clear cut that was still smoking where they had burnt it A couple days earlier.

I grew up hunting on land that was full of logged parcels. We hunted these logged areas, some fresh cut, some in other various stages of post logging. My biggest gun deer was killed, by me, after we jumped 5 bucks bedded down next to a lap pile in the middle of a clear cut. That was in Virginia.

The best hunting on our lease is next to logged areas especially in the afternoons. The thick areas hold deer. I'll be hunting next to cutover in the morning for sure.

Logged timber can be a gold mine. Especially in years to come. I would hunt the edges the first year til it grows up some. Cut you a good few intersecting trails through the cut for next year. Good place for a small food plot too.
