lime questions

Our food plots are on clear cuts where pines once where. We are going to plant grains, oats wheat etc. Will this type of food plot benefit from lime this fall? Or should wejust wait until spring ? I have read that it takes months for the lime to effect the soil. If this is true shouldnt we just wait before useing lime ? We have nevered limed in the past but we are going to this year. I believe also I read on this sight a rule of thumb is 2000 lbs per acre is a good guide line on the amount needed.

The two main reasons I was thinking about waiting.1. more than likely have to do it by hand. (very hot job) 2. If it doesnt help in the fall/ winter plants why not wait until spring. But I guess there is no time like the present.lol

It will start to help now. The very finely ground portion of the lime will begin to raise the pH in a couple of weeks.

In west Tn you almost can't go wrong with adding 2 tons/acre even without testing.

My first tests from pine areas called for 4000lbs per acre! GRRR

NOt near as bad now though.

Liming is more important than fertilization and i have never known cutover to NOT need lime. Do it and you will see the results in due time but putting it off is unwise.
