Leupold Rifleman or Leupold VX-I

How are they? I am thinking about trying one of them for my muzzleloader. I know someone will probably say you get what you pay for. I understand that and agree with it on most things. However, I'm not going to spend much more than these cost on a gun I usually don't use more than 4 days out of the year.

I think you can get more for your money (comparable money) with a Burris Fullfield II. It's optical quality is comparable to the VX-II.

Think I'd go for one of the new Redfield's instead of the Rifleman or VX-1, althought there may be little difference.

I am open to other suggestions. I want the highest quality cheap scope I can get, if that makes sense. If it were my main deer rifle that I used all season it would be different. I just can't justify a whole lot of money when I usually only hunt the two weekends of muzzleloader season.

Check out the Vortex Viper 2-7. For $149 it's one of the best bargains out there.

I'll second the redfield... don't own one, but great looking glass for the price. I don't care for the Phillipino Burris, but the Redfield and Leoupold are American made and good quality. If you go Phillipino, I think that the Nikon is a better product, IMO.

if i didn't already have a bushnell 3200 3-9 on mine it would be sporting that viper.

I like my rifleman scope! It has never failed me for what I use it for BUT I love my Redfield! I would take the Redfield over the rifleman any day! The Redfield is perfect for what I do without spending a bunch of cash. I have never looked through the VX-I so I don't know what that scope is like.

I have a 2x7x33 leupold rifleman on my muzzleloader and it does a great job.its been on my ML for about 3 years now and Ive never had any issues with it. I also have a new Redfield 2x7x33 on my 30-30 and I can say that they are the same scope.

I have the Rifleman too, it's on my Optima. 2-7X33

It's "okay" I guess, I'm not super impressed with it. Glad it's on a gun I don't shoot anymore. I might stick it on a .22 or something.


For the same money (actually less), I was more happy with the Prostaff. Even with the Prostaff being Philippines glass. Mine suit me well.

Rifleman is not comparable to the upper division (VX-1) Loopy scopes.

Just curious of why your not happy with the rifleman on your optima?

I have 4 of the Rifleman 3x9x40 LRD scopes, and 1 vx1. Personally I can't tell any difference, except in the price. I have been buying my Rifleman's from Cabela's for 199 prepaid freight. I did get one at the end of last year on a closeout sale for 179 or something like that. I just now mounted it on my new Ruger Gun Scout I got a couple weeks ago. They hold up very well, are crystal clear and will get the job done for under 200.00

I bought a Nikon Pro Staff 3x9x40 BDC a year or so ago, and I'm not impressed with the clarity at all with that scope.

The Redfields are American Made, and probably made in the same factory as the Leupolds, but unless they come out with the old Widefield style scopes they used to produce years ago, I won't be buying one.

I have put 2 new Redfields on my son's rifles and have been very impressed. If they made a silver version, I would have a few more.

I hear you on the Widefields, I have a few of those as well and I love them.

I have a VX-1 and a Rifleman as well, I can't tell a whole lot of difference in them.

I'll second the redfield... don't own one,

X3...a good friend purchased a Redfield Revolution last year for his TC MZer. Think he has $170 or so in it and has been very pleased (and he has shot it a lot). He was in the same boat as you, just could not justify spending a ton of money on a scope for his MZer that he toted 3-5 mornings a year.

Buckmasters in the 3x9x40 is hard to beat.

Leupold owns redfield now so they are the same scope. The Nikon buckmaster isn't a bad cheap scope probably better than the cheap leupolds.
