Had a spike come out after a doe Saturday. He wasn't following her, but he did come out in the same place. Thought he was going to walk on top of me, literally.

Passed on two does and a spike last Friday and shortly after another doe followed by an eight point came trotting by. You never know what might be heading your way this time of year.

The only problem with letting them walk is that they walk to wherever they are going taking and keeping the bucks with them. Now if you pop one that dies right in front of you and she's in heat, you've got the best possible "bait" known to deer kind...and...it's perfectly legal!

I did shoot a doe once, way back in my first few years of hunting...I had a tag....you needed one back then...

No sooner had I shot, then I looked and a very nice buck was trailing her.....Never saw him again.....ever.

These days....if I am going to work to get one out of where I am, across that creek, or coming in from another direction, it's gonna be a NICE one......

It's a coin toss. I've had does lead bucks by me and leave the area never to be seen again and I've had them do the same only to return by me later. If I want a doe anyway I'll drop her and like BGG said, you can get no better attractant than a hot doe on the ground in front of you. I've killed several bucks over a dead hot doe and I've seen some dramatic displays. Last year I had a good buck I would have shot after a doe just inside a thicket where I couldn't get a shot. A couple of times the doe stepped out into the opening only to return to the buck. He never followed her out. I was afraid they were going to vacate the area out the backside of this thicket without offering me a shot so the last time she stepped out I dropped her in her tracks. The buck flew out of the country and didn't return. It didn't work that time but if it happened again I wouldn't hesitate to do the same thing again. I've seen it work before.

I have shot deer out of a group of deer and the rest never knew what happened and just stood there. I have shot deer and had more come right past seconds or minutes later. Most bucks I have seen trailing does could not care less even if they did know what happened. If I can legally kill a doe in heat, I will drop her in front of me.
