Anyone mind sharing tips on hunting bucks in the mountains during the late season? This is my first season out here and I feel like I have been a week or two behind the deer everywhere I hunted so far. What food sources are the deer keying in on at this point of the year?
 
In my experience, it's some of the toughest hunting there is. No tips, just try to find a travel corridor maybe, leading to some type of browse/food source. Good luck.
 
better find some good funnels or saddles, there is no food in our mountains this year, I watched a group of does eat moss off the north side of trees and pick up mouth fulls of dead leaves for lunch last week. good luck
 
We had tons of acorns early and then they all but disappeared right around the end of October. I assume the reds hardly produced and anything the whites dropped got consumed quickly.
 
Find a good travel corridor/funnel. A break in a bluff line has always produced for me and a bench that intersect into multiple other benches. If you're in south east TN in the mountains this isn't considered late season, it's considered hunting the rut. On the calendar it looks late, but in reality it's the best time to be in the woods. Hunted the mountains my whole life and I've been very successful in doing so. Good luck.

The good hunting hasn't started yet. The week of Christmas till it closes is best for me. Same every year. If they would let us hunt through Jan. no telling what we could kill. I am talking about the area I hunt in southern Franklin near Alabama line.
 
Same here rubicon. Southern franklin county for me. Best hunting is last 2 weeks of season every year.
 
Saddles and benches..whatever you want to call them,they will skirt the tops of the hollows.

But getting to food.... I have seen this little doe we have here at the house eat oak leaves ,and seemed to like them quite a bit.
 
There is no acorns this year in the mtn. where I am at. Last year they were everywhere. My dad watched two does the other day eat off cedar trees. People that have good food plots and stuff planted around the foot of mtn. will smoke them around Christmas.

X2, hunt low, hunt powerline easements or anywhere that has any type of edible browse.
 
Yep anything green and low browse will be your best bet on yrs like this when the acorns are long gone.
