How big was the momma?

If she was a 1.5 y/o doe, it wouldn't be unusual for her to have been bred this past Feb as a fawn.

I'm sure I'll see several doe fawns come into heat late in the season this year. I've got some HUGE fawns this year!

Most biologists will quote a 20% lactation rate on 1.5 y/o's does, but normally, we don't have any wet 1.5 y/o's, despite our herd being extremely healthy. I bet that changes next year, but can't figure out exactly what the change is (I suspect must be the very wet summer we had)

Female fawns that reach a body size large enough to reach sexual maturity and enter estrus as a fawn often do so very late, as in January. In a very healthy TN deer herd, as many as 25% of female fawns reach sexual maturity and successfully reproduce as a fawn.

I have had reports of pregnant does in Oct. I confiscated a fawn that was spot-lighted in mid Nov that probably weighted 12-15 lbs whole. I also picked up a road killed spotted fawn in late Dec, might have weighed 20 lbs.
