Food Plots Late corn experiment

Corn planted July 11. I'm pretty pleased.

Looks good. The deer and turkeys will love that.

I always plant corn late. I too planted on 7/11 this year but this latest dry spell hurt me. I lost a foot or two and a lot of ears are immature. Most years I plant about 7/21-7/25. Last year was the best corn ever. It was planted on 7/22 and looked like this on 9/14. I want it mature just as muzzleloader season starts. Then I'll cut a few firing lanes through it in a spoke patter from the deer house. Works great.

Now my question is.......can you bush hog the corn then hunt over it?

Yes you can bush hog it. That's awesome planting 7/22. That's what I was going for. Let it mature after they get on acorns and not eat it til later year.

Yep! If it grows naturally out of the ground and is considered normal farming practices it's treated like a food plot.

Wow. Can't scatter corn but I can grow it and scatter it with a mower.hmmm. well I guess I know what I will be adding to my foodplot arsenal next year. But honestly that doesn't sound like normal farming practices.

Quite frankly a acre or two of corn is not going to last 5 min . A single deer can eat that up in a night . It's meaningless . But if it makes you feel like you got corn out I say go for for it,

That's a loaded question.

I guess is your a farmer in Iowa and do it right you might get 300 to 500. My guess is you might be lucky to get 15O here.

If you have say a average of 40 deer per 100 acres I would say you would need a min of 15 acres of corn to make any sort of impact on the deer behavior and of feeding habits . That's in addition to your normal browse and other food sources.

Using Pillsbury numbers...If 1 acre of corn produces 150 bushels, that's 8400 lbs of corn. 1 deer isn't going to eat that in 5 mins!

If you have 40 deer on 100 acres which is a good average. . A single deer is going to eat about 7 lbs a day. If no other wildlife feeds on the corn (doubtful) you have about a 30 day supply IF you get the full 150 bushels

I'm just saying if your looking to feed your deer and hold them there your going to need something like 15 acres to really make a significant impact .

That's isn't going to happen . My place in Hardemen Co., per camera, I'm not getting 40 deer per 5
Days eating in the corn plots or the radish plots. Now we do have a good acorn
Crop this year. Also I believe deer will
Eat natural browse over eating a ton of corn.

Today was first day I have seen any traces of deer feeding on the corn I figure it will make it thru ml which is great.

Yes, but I would just leave it standing. They learn to eat it and it last longer plus all the turrkeys and birds will not eat as much. We normally plant late but planted early this year. What a mistake, all of our has just about already been eaten... Back to late planting next year.
