Laser engraving/gunstock art

I've been looking into getting into laser engraving Guns, anyone ever try this or have had work done?

First look at the cost of the laser unit. Second you will have to have an FFL to take in firearms for work and record the info. You will also be subject to random inspection by the BATFE. Been there.

Also you will have to charge sales tax on the work you do to anyone's gun even if you are not selling the gun.

The lasers are not cheap. One of my friends opened a laser engraving service and there was a good bit of up front expense. It's definitely cool, but it's not as plug and play as it might seem.

Yes, sales tax is to be collected. Some states require sales tax even on labor costs. Others on hard items only.

Besides the FFL requirement, check with your City and County about codes, because the BATF now will. For example, the city of Murfreesboro won't allow me to have an FFL at my residential address.

I'm not doing anything to let those jack-wads in my house. "jack-wad" was the edited version of what my brain told me to type.

One limiting factor on equipment would be a unit long enough to accommodate a barrelled action.
Handguns easily in a smaller tabletop unit.

Also at one time if you could complete the work and return the firearm to the customer on the same day that you received it an FFL was not required. That's practically impossible over any period of time.
Things might be different nowadays.

I had an FFL back in the Late Bronze Age (1970s) and was told if I received any firearm, it was to be logged in, no matter how long it was kept in my shop.
