I just bought a laminated stock and need information on what type of finish I need to put on it. Thinking seriously about tung oil finish. This stock has bare wood, no type of finish or sealer. Any help would be appreciated.
 
Birchwood-Casey has what they call Tru-oil, which is linseed oil and "natural oils".

Tung oil will do the job, thats for sure.

You get the stock from micro-Fit?
 
I use tung oil on all of the stocks I refinish. The first few coats will absorb in quickly. I typically put on 14-15 coats in total and sand with 1000 grit paper in between every 3rd or 4th coat. Tung oil is great because if you mark it up in the field, you can come back and apply another coat on top.

Yep, Microfit.......It's a dual grip thumbhole..

Boyd's was cheaper but I occasionally shoot left handed and the Boyd's stock would have made it
much more difficult. The dual grip will work left handed.

Thanks for the info......Will go with one of the oil options since I will be hunting with it and
will surely get a ding or two in it.
 
I had a disagreement with Microfit which they corrected-they promised x date delivery, they were 2 weeks late and still hadn't shipped and eventually the stock arrived late but it had free (and expensive) options added on so I feel they did the right thing. The degree of work still to be done is pretty discouraging when you are as clumsy and heavy-handed as I am. My own fault, I should have inquired in much more detail than what I did.

Is the amount of sanding and grind-to-fit in line with your expectations?
 
It is very close to fitting without much work.....Luckily, I have a gunsmith friend that is fitting the rifle to the stock and glass bedding it for me. I will have to put a finish on it but that is OK.

It was hard to find a stock to fit this rifle, Winchester Model 70-pre 64, is one reason I went with them. They promised a delivery in 8 weeks and it actually came in 8 weeks. I am satisfied with the stock.
