I know we beat to death the 3 does a day thing and the kill amounts for the year. But after talking to some guys this weekend I started to wonder how many deer are killed each year by farmers after the season and allowed by the state. This guy was telling me how last year 80 deer were killed just across the river from where I hunt on the WMA. And from what I understand 3 years ago the farmer on the other side of the road from the WMA killed 60. Are the numbers killed this way a blip on the screen when it comes to overall kill numbers for the state? Could this be the cause of localized complaints about the lack of deer sightings.
 
I'm wondering if TWRA counts or includes those deer their population census or if they add those numbers to the deer kill every year?????
 
I would think that somebody has the total number of farm depredation permits given out. Not sure how well documented the number of resulting deer kills are though. Still, somebody responsible for these permits should be able to make an educated guess as to how many deer are killed this way. I'd love to know as you guys stated how it stacks up to the hunter kill numbers. It's a shame that even one of these big deer kill-offs have to happen when you have hunters who go and don't get a shot at a deer.
 
I know of one farmer that had 150 permits. He said to me I used them all then some.

And yet he wouldn't let anyone hunt his farm. Unreal.
 
I read a few years ago about a guy in Shelby cty that was near the Wolf River and he shot 30+ deer that year. Its the leaving them in the field that bothers me for a lot of reasons. One being no one guts a deer on my farms....ever. Have enough problems with critters. Also tremendous waste that could be put to good use. TWRA where are you?

Yea, I have a farmer beside me that kills hugh amounts. I had two does last yr., each with small twin fawns, and I mean small. Was seeing them every day .Went back to the farm a few days later, starting seeing both sets by themselves. Then the buzzards appeared. Found both does laying right on my line on the edge of neighbours soybeans. These fawns weren't much taller than knee high. I wish TWRA would at least make them pick up the deer instead of wasteing them. I know the deer may do some damage, but its really wasteful.
 
With only 32 acres you can't really say the deer shifted off of you unless possibly every acre of surrounding land is open and you have the only cover. They may be on your land regularly but probably only crossing from point A to point B. I'd say they're still around.

Understandably, not many folks can own a lot of acreage. As much as anyone likes deer hunting and the idea of hunting their own deer mecca property, small parcels of land are simply like pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. Each piece is needed or used but no single piece creates the entire puzzle. Like it or not, and usually no matter how you manage that "single" piece except possibly in extraordinary situations, a deer is simply not going to lock down on a small parcel of land 24/7.
