My yellow lab is 14 and know the time is coming

I'd love to have another lab but don't feel like putting the effort into a pup they require right now.

Same here. I told my wife I don't want to do it again. Once they outgrow the crazy puppy stage (which lasts for several years with Labs), you won't ever find a better dog. But it just hurts too bad to lose them.

Working on a knife today and I didn't realize how much I talked to her while I was out there working. She was my sounding board. Didn't matter what I said or how bad I might have screwed something up, she would just wag her tail and wait to be petted when I spoke to her.

Edit: I sincerely apologize for the derail @N_Childers. Best dogs there are!!! The loss of mine is still stinging at the moment. Beautiful pups!

Best dog I ever had was my chocolate Lab Callie.
Lost her right at 2 years ago, I still miss her something awful.
Labs are just the best.
