Smokeless Knurling question

I think I understand how knurling is done. But my question is what kind of a file do you use.

Any kind of file will work. The rougher the better though. If you decide you really want to bear down on the top file make sure you put something behind it to support it. Files are hardened and will snap/shatter if you get on them really hard.

I epoxied my top file to the bottom of a similar length wood rasp with bearing handles. Works well and supports the file even with heavy downward pressure.

I use a lathe with a knurling tool. :)
