Picked one up last weekend.. Really nice looking rifle, still had the box, paperwork, all shim plate, stock spacers and factory sights....Probably get her out this weekend and try to find out what type ammo she likes to shoot...Does anyone have an experience with the 82G 22lr?

Thanks,

Mike

I have shot a couple and they shoot well,,my older brother has one that has been blueprinted and shoots extremely well,,you can shoot it off a rest but the 82G stock is really meant to be shot from position,,

my brother shoots Lapua CenterX in his and it will hold the X ring on the NRA 100 yard smallbore target pretty easy,,the factory sights are very good but he has a Leupold 6.5-20 EFR on his,,

very good rifles you can read the history on in the CMP forums,,I think there was around 25,000 made in the mid-late 80`s for the Army and have been sold to the public through the CMP,,

Thanks for the info on it. I have not done anything with it as of now. Cleaned it, removed the factory sights and put a sightron SIII on it. Hopefully shoot it at 50 and 100 this evening when the wind lays down.

I bought a 82 classic new back around 1990. I paid $540 for it and I remember the 82G's selling for $340 for quite a while when they 1st came out a few years later. I gave a lot of thought to getting one but never did. I used my 82 sporter mainly to shoot 22 rimfire silhouette matches with. It never was competitive to the Anshutz heavy barrel rifles most of the other guys had but I honestly didn't care since I wasn't interested in winning matches - just enjoyed shooting and hanging around with other gun nuts. The Kimber is accurate though - just not a match rifle. Well, the sporter at least. You can't measure the value of how good such a rifle feels though. The workmanship and quality of an 82 sporter has to be seen to appreciate what a "mere 22" can be. :)

was your sporter made in New York,,if so those are worth some money,,

the 82G had to shoot 3 10 shot groups in a row at 50 yards under.700 inches or 3 10 shot groups at 100 yards under 1.50 inches, with no do overs or mulligans ,,if they could find a rifle that wouldnt hold that accuracy the whole contract would be voided,,

No, mine was made in Oregon. If I'm not mistaken, those were the originals, weren't they? I know the Yonkers, NY version had a 3 position safety and the Mauser style claw extractor which makes them more collectible but seems a bit silly for a rimfire to me. Regardless of which version is discussed, they are all very nice rifles. The Cooper Arms company that split off of the original Kimber rifle company before Kimber got so into handguns, has always intrigued me with all their short action little sporters chambered for the interesting little 22 centerfires. That has always been my main weakness.
