Killing weeds in the winter

Does using a broad-spectrum herbicide, such as Round-up, have any effects on the dormant vegetation, or does it only kill things that are green and still "alive"?

I've wondered about this for the purposes of both food plots and my own yard. I normally only do treatments when things are growing, but I got to thinking about this when looking at my yard earlier. Since many of the weeds stay green throughout the winter (especially this winter, since it's been so mild), it seems like now would be the time to agressively try killing them.

Its been my experience if its above 60 it will work.

Has to be actively growing. Could go either way right now on alot of plants honestly.

Round up kills plant by stopping photosynthesis. If the plant is not actively growing, it will not work, since photosynthesis is not occurring when they are dormant.

I've been spraying round up @ work for 2 weeks on and off. The weeds sprayed earlier are turning yellow. It's just slower than when the temps are higher. If it stays warm like it has been I say spray away!

Good information. My understanding is that green = active photosynthesis (although as sharpshooter pointed out, in colder temperatures it would be less active).

please correct me if you CAN have dormant weeds that are still green.

Dormant grasses such as bermuda, zoysia, centipede do not suffer any effects from Roundup......let er rip. I do in the winter before green up and i also burn my dead bermuda just before green up to accelerate the growth thru the thatch. Works great.
