Do your Kieffer pears look like this? I have eaten these pears for the past two years and to me they are very tasty. They are crispy like an apple but with more juice.

I am asking because Kieffers are suppose to be rock hard and not taste sweet. They are also suppose to ripen late Setember/early October and these are already starting to ripen and the birds are starting to eat them. They also dont really have a pear shape. Is it possible this is a different variey, and if so what type?

 
Its impossible to say without testing but your observations would indicate that those are not Kieffers. Like you mentioned, every Kieffer Ive ever come across is very hard. Kieffers are usually more "gritty" than alot of pears as well because of thier large stone cells. My Kieffers do not ripen until October. Those look rather asian but who knows.
 
Here is another look at the fruit. I purchased these almost five years ago and they were labled as Keiffer but they were from Walmart, so we all know how that goes. I may try grafting this variety on a different pear tree because I really like it.

 
Looks like an Asian variety to me as well. Kieffers are hard and gritty but I've discovered if you pick them off the tree and store them in the frig for a few weeks they really turn sweet. They'll keep a long time.

I went to Kroger yesterday and coughed up $1.38 for one asian pear just see the resemblence to this pear. Sure enough, the texture was very close, although my pears taste a heck of a lot better than the one at the store.
 
I have a two similar pear trees on my property that Justin of Back acre food plots pointed out to me recently. I would be interested in identifying the variety also. I live out of state, but was just there a few weeks ago. Both trees were loaded. I ate a couple of them while I was there and they were actually pretty tasty. I'll try to download a pic. They are near an old home site so they have been there for awhile.
 
Here's a pic of the pears on my property, looks very similar to yours. This pic was taken in early July. I was there over the labor day weekend. I had a couple while I was there. They were a little hard, but tasty. Only saw one on the ground,eaten by something. I don't know what variety they are yet, but I'm glad to have them on my place.

 
Those look exacly like the asian I planted two years ago. The fruit should be just getting ripe. I tested one a couple weeks ago and it had very little flavor at that time.
