This may be a stupid question. However, I can't remember as to myself and don't really have anyone to ask. At what age are kids usually physically able to shoot certain weapons. Of course, I know this isn't a dead set thing and would depend on the child. I'm just looking for a general idea. My son is six and can shoot a 22 find. I haven't let him try anything else. I don't want to do it to quick and cause problems but I don't want to hold him back either.

All kids are different but noise seems to be the biggest issue with my grand kids,good hearing protection and a 223 in a AR rifle has almost 0 recoil.busting balloons and water jugs makes them forget about concussion and noise to some extent. I was shooting a sweet 16 at 7 busting beer bottles thrown in the air,love burning any kind of powder to this day

then i got him a 410 sg forgot ear muffs = major set back

Started with 22 bolt at age 12. Move to Marlin model 60 about two years later.

Then to 243 with light loads and so on up the caliber & load steps.

Two things:
1: Hearing loss can occur with a single round
2: I never loaded the model 60 with more than two rounds until I was sure the kids were competent.

I have video of my daughter at five years old shooting a ar-15 in 223 .The main thing is good hearing protection. Now she is ten years old and can by far out shoot me. She still loves shooting the ar-15 and has killed two deer with it.

I purposely waited for my sons to get 10 years of age before shooting and buying them their own rifles. I felt like that was right for "them".

Lots of variables.
Like they said the most important thing is hearing protection.
Not just for the safety but the noise bothers them as much, if not more, than the recoil in my opinion.

My 5 year old daughter will shoot the little Rossi combo as long as I load it for her. She has shot one of my ar15s a few times but she is pretty small and enjoys the 22 alot more. She wants to hunt but I don't think she is ready yet.

My son is 5. He shot his first 22 at age 4. Then shot my ar shortly after that. Today is fired a 410 twice with my help. Ear muffs is an absolute must. Each kid is different tho. I try not to push him. Let him tell me when he's ready to a extent. He's been deer hunting 15-16 times with me. He loves it.
