I am pretty scared of heights. It doesn't stop me from climbing up or saddle/treestand hunting, but the fear is there. When I started hunting off the ground last year, I started a system with my friends and family.

I always make sure that someone that knows the property I am hunting is aware that I am out there and where I plan to hunt. If I am on one of my places that has poor cell coverage, I do not deviate from the plan unless I am just staying on the ground. If I have cell service and change the plan, I send them a screen shot from Huntstand with the new location.

I make sure to communicate a time that they can expect to hear from me with an all clear. I then make sure to let them know I am safe. Don't want to be the boy that cried wolf and have folks headed out to look for me when I am on my way home.

I hate the idea of dangling from a tree while I slowly die or lying broken at the base of it being eaten by lesser predators.


What do you all do to keep your friends and families in the loop and stay safe in the woods?
 
I use google maps. Pull up my location on the phone and mark it and immediately send it as an email or text to my wife in case I were not to return home. I have good cell coverage on my lease so it is never a problem.

I always do this before I climb into the tree or stand. Only takes about 15 seconds to do and God forbid if anything ever happened then they will know exactly where to look for me.
 
On our lease, we just tell others where we are going to be.If we are going to hunt past noon and not come in we let others know. In the evening we watch to see if everyone makes it back to camp. Our group works well together and help take care of each other. Married guys usually call there wives and let them know they are in safely.
 
It's good to communicate your location with others. You just never know.... I put a lot of faith in my harness set up. I'm confident that I'll never hit the ground again like I did a few years back while not wearing it.
 
I try to let a buddy know where I'm going, but I don't do it often enough. I am tied to the tree though. And never been afraid of heights

I always let my wife know where I'm going and text here when I'm in the tree. I also have one to two buddies that will know my exact location on about ever hunt if my wife fails to hear from me.

I pretty much don't have cell service in most of my stands, barely in a couple of them. I hunt by myself anymore as my cousin has been out of hunting for a few years. Hope he's coming back this year tho, as nobody really knows my exact locations other than him.
 
I generally don't tell anyone anything. I live alone and most of my friends are "city girls". If something terminal happens, then I am out where I would want to be. As for animals, if I'm dead, they can eat all they want.
 
I'm usually hunting with a buddy, but when I'm not I let my wife know where I'll be. For the places I don't have cell service I take my SPOT tracker. It is a satellite tracker that will send an SOS message to a predetermined phone number or email address (can send to multiple), or also has a function to alert emergency rescue services if I take a really bad spill.
