Keep in the pot 1 more year?

I have a chestnut I started from seed last year (this is its second summer). It is roughly 7 ft or so tall and is in a 7 gal pot. My farm has really poor soil and growing trees up there takes a LONG time. I was thinking of transplanting the tree into a 15 gal pot and keeping it at the house for another year (fertilize on a schedule, get good growth).

I will have other small chestnuts at the house anyway so there will not be any real hassle.

What are some cons?

It would be in the ground if it was mine.But,I might dig a momma sized hole and fill it with some quality dirtmixed with yours. It willltake off that way and be in the ground the whole time,kinda like an experiment.

I have been meaning to try this with some trees myself and had though the size you are describing is where I would get them to before planting. It's always somewhat of a shock to transplant a tree bareroot but if you can keep the dirtball on it from the bucket you don't have to worry about that. If you keep it a year longer and put it in a 15 gallon bucket, it's going to get heavier and harder to deal with making damage more likely when you do transplant. I agree with Diamond Hunter about digging the hole bigger and filling with some kind of potting soil. As I always say, I would mix Moisture Mizer in with that dirt too. It makes all the difference by holding water by the roots.

Yeah I get it.....Thats what I will do! Its amazing what kind of growth you can get out of these trees in a year.
