stopped by and seen the Old Man for his birthday,and he showed me his bday present..

Sako TRG42 in 338 Lapua Magnum,,27 1/8th inch bbl not counting the muzzle break,Sako claims .5 MOA to 1000 yards with the Lapua 250 gr Scenar factory ammo,,at 6$ a round I doubt it will see much of that,,but heck Lapua brass is 2.50 a piece just for the brass,,anyhow here it is without the scope,he says it is getting a 5.5-22 Nightforce ..

gonna start testing at 500 yards with the 300 gr Berger VLD and 300 gr Sierra MatchKing bullets and H1000 powder,,
 
just looked at Hogdons site and they list 160 X Bullets at 3700 fps up to 300 gr Sierras at 2700,,I hope that break works,,LOL,,this could get fun quick
 
Very nice. I ain't much of a long range big bore fan but if I got one it would be the .338 Lapua mag. That rifle ought to be able to reach out there a long, long, long way! PH
 
Sweet! Take the break off of it for a couple of shots. Chewing aluminum foil is about as fun as shooting a 338 Lapua. Jackson county deer aren't safe at any range now.
 
Oh, be careful with the 300 grainers on deer. Apparantely, they aren't holding up with the EDGE and possibly the lapua mag velocities and exploding on game, even at distance. Berger is apparantely developing them with thicker jackets in the future to be more applicable for those wanting to ignite 100 grains of powder under them.
 
he told a story yesterday about when he bought a 1969 SS Camaro with the 375 HP 396 cubic inch motor and Rockcrusher 4 speed pink unicorn with 4.10 gears,,"Brand New" in 1969,,he said that rifle cost more than that car,,LOL
 
tell him not to worry...

the resell on the sako trg's is generally only 10% under new, so he's not going to take a huge hit if he has to sell. They hold their value well.
 
I know the SS weighed 3250 pounds and cost 3250 $$,,he did not say exactly what the rifle cost,,but I take it was over 3250,
 
Nice rig. Don't test it or you will be hooked. My partner and I just built 2 improved versions.They are tack drivers. Just wish we had somewhere close by to stretch em out past 400 yards. Let us know if you need some range help up there.

his cheap glass is gonna be a 5,5-22 Nightforce with 20 MOA taper Badger base,,plan on shooting in about a month to 6 weeks,,brass and bullets are expensive for this thing,,gonna start load work up here at my 500 yard range to get a feel for it before moving out to 1000,then we plan on trying our luck at 1500 next spring,,

300 Sierras and H1000 gonna be the starting load,,everything I have read the 300`s really hit a sweet spot at 2850 fps with a BC of .850,,that is VERY close to 50 BMG balistics,,

rumor has it the 300 Bergers are not designed to shoot well above 2800FPS
 
the 300 grainers have been a little unpredictable on deer for my cousin at 2950 fps MV.... itty bitty groups on paper, though.

crazy stuff like penciling through if no bone is hit, to completely exploding if bone is hit. (at 500-800 yards)

He's going to try the 265gr barnes on deer this year. BC sucks for a 338 cal, but they're going 3250fps out of his EDGE with 1/3" groups at 100.
