A friend and I will be looking to hunt Kansas next year. I'm just curious how the draw system works?

Required to purchase license beforehand?
Likeliness of getting drawn?
 
As bobbuck indicates, it does mainly depend on unit and weapon. Rifle and muzzleloader may take a few years or longer, whereas archery will likely be a shorter time for drawing. Also, I believe the eastern part of Kansas seems to have more entries. I archery hunt only in a unit that is located more towards the western part of Kansas, and I get drawn every year. A coworker at my office put in for archery last year in an eastern unit and didn't get drawn.

They did make it where you have to now by your license before applying for the quota. So if you don't get drawn you're out about $100.
 
I'm pretty sure Unit 11 is the unit my coworker put in for and didn't get drawn for Archery last year.
 
I bought a preference point this year because I need to research where to apply for archery and have the most public land access. But I may end up trying to hunt Fort Riley next year.
